Middlesbrough vs Hull City: the 2026 Championship Play-Off Final
After one of the most dramatic build-ups in the competition's history, Middlesbrough and Hull City will meet at Wembley on Saturday 23 May 2026. Middlesbrough were originally eliminated by Southampton in the semi-finals, but following the 'Spygate' scandal โ in which Southampton admitted to multiple breaches of EFL regulations relating to the unauthorised filming of opponents' training sessions โ the Saints were expelled from the play-offs by an independent disciplinary commission. Middlesbrough were reinstated and now face Hull City for promotion to the Premier League.
For Hull, it is a chance to end a near-decade absence from the top flight. For Boro, it is an opportunity to complete an extraordinary comeback story and end their own seven-year Premier League exile.

The road to Wembley
Both finalists earned their spot in dramatic fashion. Hull City got past Millwall over two legs to secure their place. Middlesbrough were initially eliminated by Southampton in a 2-1 aggregate defeat after extra time, but following the disciplinary commission's ruling on Spygate, Boro were reinstated directly into the final. Southampton, who had been the form team of the four play-off contenders, were expelled from the play-offs and additionally hit with a four-point deduction for the 2026/27 Championship season.
