The Stadio Luigi Ferraris opened as far back as 1911, making it the oldest football stadium still in use in Italy. It took its current name in 1933 in honour of Luigi Ferraris, a former Genoa player who died in the First World War. For the 1990 World Cup, the ground was almost entirely rebuilt, with only the historic entrance preserved, giving it its distinctive compact shape with four separate stands sitting right on the edge of the pitch. Not only its great age, also its closed design without a running track make the Stadio Luigi Ferraris one of the loudest and most intense grounds in Serie A. By Bus

Club history
Genoa Cricket and Football Club was founded on 7 September 1893 at the British consulate in Genoa, making it the oldest football club still active in Italy. The club won the very first Italian championship as early as 1898 and went on to collect nine Scudetti by 1923-24, a record that for a long time made the Grifone the most successful club in the country. Not only the sheer number of titles, also the club’s sheer age still shapes the nickname “Il Vecchio Balordo”, the “grand old fool”, an affectionate name given to the club by supporters and press alike.
The 2025-26 season was far from a smooth ride for Genoa. Under head coach Patrick Vieira, the team dropped into the relegation zone after nine matchdays, before the club first responded with Roberto Murgita and Domenico Criscito as caretakers, then finally appointed Daniele De Rossi as the new head coach. De Rossi, who had already managed Genoa once before during a difficult spell, guided the Grifone, thanks to a very solid second half of the season, to mathematical safety with three matchdays still to play. A key moment was the 2-1 home win against Sassuolo on 12 April 2026, with goals from Ruslan Malinovskyi and Caleb Ekuban, a big step towards staying up. Genoa finished the season in 16th place with 41 points, and De Rossi’s contract was automatically extended to 30 June 2027.
