Stadium information
Name:
LEAG Energie Stadion (historically known as Stadion der Freundschaft)
Capacity:
22,528
Address:
Am Eliaspark 1, 03042 Cottbus, Germany
Description:
The LEAG Energie Stadion holds 22,528 spectators for league matches, split between 10,949 covered seats, 7,795 covered standing places and 3,630 uncovered standing places, on the site in the Sandow district that generations of fans still call the “Stadion der Freundschaft”. Not only does the ground sit right beside the Spree river, also its floodlights, installed in 1997, run at 1,800 lux across the pitch. Originally built between 1925 and 1930, the stadium went through major renovations in 1983-88, 1995 and 1997, with further expansions in 1985 and 2008. You will find 154 wheelchair spaces built into the stands, and you will feel nearly a century of history the moment you take seat.
Best way to travel to the LEAG Energie Stadion
When you’ve booked your Energie Cottbus tickets it’s time to find out how you can get to the stadium. The ground sits about 10 to 20 minutes on foot from Cottbus Hauptbahnhof, uphill via Vetschauer Straße and Görlitzer Straße. These are the options you have to get to the ground.
By Train
Tram lines 2 and 4 serve the area, with the “Görlitzer Straße” stop leaving around five minutes on foot to the stadium. Your matchday ticket also covers free travel on the local Cottbusverkehr network from two hours before kick-off until two hours after the final whistle.
By Car
Coming from Berlin, take the A15 to exit “Cottbus-West”, then follow the B169. From Dresden, take the A13 towards Berlin, exit at “Großräschen”, then the B96 onto the B169. From the Polish border and Forst, take the A15 to exit “Cottbus-Süd”, then the B97 towards the B168. Paid parking is available at Sandower Dreieck and Parzellenstraße, though space is limited, while Park+Ride sites at Sachsendorf and Thiemstraße connect to the ground via tram line 4. Away fans typically park on Parzellenstraße, around five minutes from the guest entrance.
By Bike
With the stadium sitting just off the Spree and close to the city centre, plenty of local fans choose to cycle in on matchday rather than compete for the limited parking near the ground.
LEAG Energie Stadion guide
The LEAG Energie Stadion has been rebuilt in stages since it first opened in 1930, and even today, with barely 22,500 seats and standing places combined, the atmosphere here feels close and intense at every corner. On the opposite side from the main stand sits the section most associated with the home support, but every stand plays its own part on a matchday in Cottbus.
Standing terrace
The covered standing terrace holds 7,795 fans and is where the loudest Energie support gathers, with songs that start well before kick-off and rarely let up for the full 90 minutes.
Main stand
Fully seated and covered, the main stand forms the bulk of the stadium’s 10,949 seats and gives the calmest and most comfortable view of the action.
Uncovered terrace
With room for 3,630 fans, the uncovered standing terrace runs along the pitch and offers a good overview of the whole ground at a lower price than the main stand.
Away section
Visiting supporters are housed in a dedicated block with 1,557 standing places and 740 seats, clearly separated from the home areas on matchday.
Which stand should you choose?
Not every stand gives you the same experience at the LEAG Energie Stadion. We made this table so you can compare the options in one quick look. Check what matters to you and you will find the right stand.
| Priority | Best Stand | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Best atmosphere | Standing terrace | Covered standing terrace, the loudest and most traditional home support in Cottbus |
| Best view | Main Stand Central | Fully seated and covered, central sightline along the length of the pitch |
| First-time visitor | Uncovered Terrace | Easy to find, good overview of the whole ground |
| Families with children | Main Stand Upper | Fully seated, calmer part of the ground, away from the standing terrace |
| Accessible seating | Main Stand | Part of the stadium’s 154 wheelchair spaces |
| Budget-conscious | Uncovered Terrace | Standing places, good value for a first LEAG Energie Stadion visit |
| Premium comfort | Main Stand VIP | Covered seating with the best hospitality in the ground |
Energie Cottbus Club Information
Current Manager:
Claus-Dieter Wollitz
Current Captain:
Axel Borgmann
League Position Last Season:
2nd place, 3. Liga 2025-26
Club history
Energie Cottbus traces its roots to 1963, when SC Cottbus was founded, before the football department split off on 31 January 1966 to form BSG Energie Cottbus, named for the region’s lignite mining and energy industry. The club became FC Energie Cottbus after German reunification. Through the DDR-Oberliga era the club had several spells at the top level, in 1973, 1975, 1981, 1986 and 1988, but often saw its best players move on to bigger East German sides. Energie’s real breakthrough came after reunification: promoted to the Bundesliga in 2000, the club played two spells in the German top flight, 2000-2003 and 2006-2009, with their best finish, 13th place, coming in 2006-07. More recent years brought spells in the Regionalliga Nordost before the club won that division in 2023-24 and returned to 3. Liga, then finished runner-up there in 2025-26 to secure automatic promotion back to the 2. Bundesliga, twelve years after their last appearance at this level.
Claus-Dieter Wollitz, the coach who led both the 2023-24 Regionalliga title and the 2025-26 promotion campaign, has continued into 2026-27 with Axel Borgmann as his captain, under contract with the club through June 2028.
German influences
The ground everyone in Cottbus still calls the “Stadion der Freundschaft” carried the club’s name for more than seventy years before a naming-rights deal introduced the LEAG Energie Stadion name in 2023, and older fans still use the traditional name out of habit. Energie’s own name comes straight from the Lausitz region’s lignite and energy industry that shaped Cottbus through the twentieth century. Come to a match at the LEAG Energie Stadion and you will feel quite fast why this proud eastern German club still means so much to the Lausitz region.
Energie Cottbus Honours & Trophies
Energie Cottbus holds one of the more remarkable stories in modern German football, the only club from outside the top two divisions to reach a DFB-Pokal final, and the club’s 2025-26 promotion push showed that fighting spirit is still there. Dynamo Dresden
