Stadium information
Name:
San Mames
Capacity:
53,200
Address:
Rafael Moreno Pitxitxi, s/n, 48013 Bilbao, Bizkaia, Spain
Description:
San Mames, known as "La Catedral", has been the home of Athletic Club since 2013, when the new stadium was opened on the same site where the old San Mames once stood. Located in the heart of Bilbao, it is considered one of the stadiums with the best atmosphere in Europe. The name comes from the San Mames chapel that stood near the original stadium. La Catedral is famous for its demanding but respectful supporters, who create a unique atmosphere at every match. The stadium has hosted matches at Euro 2020 and Copa del Rey finals.
The best way to get to San Mames
Once you have your tickets for an Athletic Club match, you will need to work out how to get to the stadium. The club advises using public transport, so we recommend avoiding taking the car to the stadium, as traffic in the surrounding area can be heavy on matchdays.
By underground
The underground is the most convenient and quickest way to get there. San Mames station (lines 1 and 2) is located right next to the stadium. From central Bilbao (Moyua or Abando), the journey takes barely 5 minutes.
By tram
The Bilbao tram (EuskoTran) is another good option, as there is a stop right at San Mames. The journey takes only a few minutes and connects the city centre with the stadium.
By bus
There are several Bilbobus stops around the stadium. Lines 01, 10, 56 and A4 will take you to San Mames.
San Mames Stadium guide
San Mames has been one of the most iconic stadiums in Spain since it opened in 2013. Its supporters are known for being among the most loyal and passionate in the country, which is why its 53,290 seats are usually sold out. That is where we come in, as we have tickets for every Athletic Club match. The stadium is divided into four main stands: Tribuna Principal, Tribuna Este, Tribuna Sur and Tribuna Norte.
Tribuna Principal
In this area you will find the VIP boxes, the press area and the most exclusive seats at San Mames. From here you get the best visibility and maximum comfort. However, prices in this area are the highest, although the experience justifies it.
Tribuna Este
Tribuna Este is located directly opposite, so it also offers a panoramic view of the entire pitch. It is a very popular area among supporters looking for good visibility without the premium price of Tribuna Principal, and it undoubtedly also offers a great combination of atmosphere and comfort.
Tribuna Norte
This is the area where the team's singing section is located, so this is where the chants begin throughout the match. If what you want is to experience the true atmosphere of San Mames and you do not mind the noise for the full 90 minutes, this section is ideal.
Tribuna Sur
This is the most family-friendly area, but without giving up the great atmosphere that can be felt throughout the stadium. The opposite goal may be a little far away, but San Mames is a stadium where every seat offers good visibility. In the upper part of this area is the section allocated to away supporters.
Which area should you choose?
It is important to be able to make the best decision when booking your tickets for an Athletic Club match. That is why we have created this table with a quick comparison of the four stands. You will be able to review what matters most to you when watching a match and choose the stand that best suits your preferences.
| Priority | Best area | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Best atmosphere | Tribuna Norte | This is where the singing section is located, so it is the noisiest area |
| Best views | Tribuna Principal or Tribuna Este (central area) | Perfect panoramic visibility of the entire pitch |
| First visit | Tribuna Este or Tribuna Principal | This is the area where you feel most immersed in the stadium. Great atmosphere and visibility |
| Families with children | Tribuna Familiar or Tribuna Sur | Comfortable seats and a more relaxed atmosphere |
| On a budget | Tribuna Norte or Tribuna Sur (upper area) | Good value for money, good views |
| See the players up close | Tribuna Principal | Very close to the bench and the warm-up area |
| Maximum comfort and exclusivity | Tribuna Principal | Premium seats, access to VIP areas |

Other information
Athletic Club are one of the oldest teams in Spain, having been founded in 1898. What makes this team unique is its academy philosophy, as only players born in or developed in the Basque Country can play for the club. The manager is Ernesto Valverde, who returned to Athletic Club in 2022 for his third spell as the club's manager. The coach from Extremadura, who also managed Barcelona, is one of the most beloved managers in Athletic's history, as under his leadership the team have returned to competing for European places and have once again developed a clear playing identity.

Rivalries
Main rival
The Basque Derby vs Real Sociedad
The Basque derby is one of the most special fixtures in Spanish football. Unlike other rivalries, this derby is characterised by mutual respect between both teams and their supporters, as they share a common cultural identity. Even so, every meeting is marked by a high level of intensity, making them fiercely contested and emotional matches, in a clear demonstration of the pride of the region.
Minor rivalries
Real Madrid and Barcelona
Although these are not geographical rivalries, matches against Real Madrid and Barcelona always carry special meaning for Athletic, as they are the two giants of Spanish football and the rivals with whom they have most often fought for titles throughout history. In addition, these fixtures represent the clash between Athletic's academy philosophy and the financial power of the biggest clubs. Victories against these teams are especially celebrated in Bilbao, as they show that the club's philosophy can compete at the highest level.
