Stadium information
Name:
Red Bull Arena
Capacity:
47,069
Address:
Am Sportforum 3, 04105 Leipzig, Germany
Description:
The Red Bull Arena was originally built in 1954 as the Zentralstadion, one of the largest stadiums in East Germany. After German reunification the stadium fell into disrepair, and it was completely rebuilt between 2002 and 2004. The current arena was taken over by Red Bull in 2010 and renamed. RB Leipzig played their first ever Bundesliga match here on 20 August 2016, a 2–1 victory at home that announced the arrival of a new force in German football. The stadium holds 47,069 spectators and creates one of the louder atmospheres in the Bundesliga, particularly on big European nights.
Best way to travel to Red Bull Arena
When you’ve booked your RB Leipzig tickets it’s time to find out how you can get to the stadium. The club advises everybody to take public transport. These are the options you can use to get to the Red Bull Arena.
By Tram
The tram is the easiest and most direct way to reach the Red Bull Arena from the city centre. Lines 4 and 7 stop at Sportforum/Messe, which is a short walk from the stadium. The journey from Leipzig Hauptbahnhof takes around 10 to 15 minutes. On matchdays the trams run more frequently and you will find plenty of other fans heading in the same direction. It is almost impossible to miss your stop because the stadium is clearly visible from the tram.
By S-Bahn
The S-Bahn also connects the city centre to the area around the stadium. From Leipzig Hauptbahnhof take any S-Bahn line heading north and transfer to a tram or bus at a connecting stop. The S-Bahn is a good option if you are coming from further away within the Leipzig region. Also this is a reliable and punctual way to arrive without worrying about traffic.
By Bus
Several bus lines serve the stadium area, with extra services running on matchdays. Bus is the best option for fans who are staying in parts of the city not well connected by tram. Check the LVB app before you travel to find the best route from your location to the stadium.
By Bicycle
Leipzig is one of the most cycling-friendly cities in Germany. The Red Bull Arena is well connected to the city’s cycling network and there is bicycle parking available outside the ground. On the bicycle you’ve got all the freedom you need. You can surpass traffic jams and avoid crowded public transport after the match, especially on busy European nights when the trams fill up fast.
Red Bull Arena guide
The Red Bull Arena is a modern, purpose-built stadium with excellent sightlines from every seat. The 47,069 capacity makes it one of the bigger grounds in the Bundesliga. The stadium is divided into four stands: the Südtribüne, the Nordtribüne, the Osttribüne and the Haupttribüne.
Südtribüne (South Stand)
The Südtribüne is the home of RB Leipzig’s most dedicated supporters. This is the place where the singing starts and where you will find the core of the RB Leipzig fan base. The lower section has standing places and creates the most intense atmosphere in the stadium. This is the place where the real RB Leipzig fans take seat. When you want to experience the full atmosphere of a match at the Red Bull Arena, you need to look for Südtribüne tickets. Whenever Leipzig play towards this goal, you will feel the noise build up and carry all the way across the pitch.
Nordtribüne (North Stand)
On the opposite site of the Südtribüne, you will find the Nordtribüne. Also this stand has a home supporter following with some standing sections. Away fans are placed in a section of the Nordtribüne, clearly separated from the home areas. Especially during the big Bundesliga rivalry matches, you will feel the atmosphere between the home and away ends from the Nordtribüne very clearly.
Haupttribüne (Main Stand / West)
Along one side of the pitch you will find the Haupttribüne. This stand offers the best sightlines of the entire pitch and is where you will find the press box, the VIP sections and the corporate hospitality areas. For the premium experience you can take seat in the business class section on the middle tier. In the Haupttribüne it’s a bit more about the luxury and a bit less about the football atmosphere. But you know for sure you will have the best view in the stadium.
Osttribüne (East Stand)
On the opposite site of the Haupttribüne, you will find the Osttribüne. Also this stand has very good sightlines across the full width of the pitch. It is slightly more affordable than the Haupttribüne and gives you an excellent view without being in the most intense sections. The Osttribüne is a popular choice for neutral visitors and families who want a clear view of the action from the side.
Which stand should you choose?
It’s important to be able to make the best decision when booking your RB Leipzig tickets. That’s why we’ve created this table with a quick comparison about all four stands. Check what’s important to you and you will find the best stand for your wishes.
| Priority | Best Stand | Why |

| Best atmosphere | Südtribüne Lower | Standing section, home ultras, loudest part of the ground |

Club history
RB Leipzig was founded in 2009 when the energy drinks company Red Bull took over the license of the fifth-division club SSV Markranstädt. What followed was one of the most remarkable ascents in German football history. In just seven seasons the club climbed from the fifth division all the way to the Bundesliga, reaching the top flight for the first time in the 2016-2017 season. In their very first Bundesliga season RB Leipzig finished second, which was almost as shocking to the German football world as the promotion itself. The club is officially named “RasenBallsport Leipzig” in their statutes to comply with German football’s rules on commercial naming, but the connection to Red Bull is clear to everyone. Not only the name, also the playing style, the scouting network and the coaching philosophy are all connected to the wider Red Bull football organisation, which also includes FC Red Bull Salzburg and Red Bull Bragantino.
German influences
Despite the international ownership, RB Leipzig has always had strong German influences. David Raum, who came through the Hoffenheim academy before joining Leipzig in 2022, now wears the captain’s armband and is one of the best left backs in German football. Also Lukas Klostermann, who came through the Leipzig youth system, has been a key player for both club and country. The club’s coaching staff has a strong German core, and the connection to the Red Bull Salzburg academy means a steady flow of young talent arriving at the club. Not only does this give Leipzig a reliable pipeline of players, also the tactical development of those players is very consistent from one season to the next.

Rivalries
Main Rivals
Rivalry with Bayern München
The fixture between RB Leipzig and Bayern München is the most important in RB Leipzig’s short history. Leipzig have finished as Bundesliga runners-up twice, both times behind Bayern. The two clubs met in the Champions League group stage in 2021-2022, and Leipzig have beaten Bayern on several occasions in the Bundesliga, most famously 3-0 at home on 11 September 2021. Whenever RB Leipzig are in the title race, this fixture becomes the most discussed match of the season.
Minor Rivalries
Rivalry with Borussia Dortmund
The rivalry with Borussia Dortmund has grown over the years as both clubs compete for the second spot in the Bundesliga behind Bayern. Leipzig’s high-energy pressing style and Dortmund’s attacking football always produce entertaining matches. Dortmund beat Leipzig 4-1 in the DFB-Pokal final on 13 May 2021, which remains a painful memory for RB Leipzig supporters. The fixture now carries real title-race weight on a regular basis.
Rivalry with Bayer Leverkusen
The rivalry with Bayer Leverkusen is also worth mentioning. Both clubs have been the main challengers to Bayern München’s dominance in recent seasons, and when they meet there is always a lot at stake in the Bundesliga table. Also the stylistic similarity between the two clubs – both pressing teams with strong tactical organisation – means the matches are always closely fought and very physical.
