Stadium information
Name:
RheinEnergieStadion
Capacity:
50,000
Address:
Aachener Straße 999, 50933 Cologne, Germany
Description:
The RheinEnergieStadion is one of the most famous football grounds in Germany. The site of the current stadium has been used for football since 1923, when it opened as the Müngersdorfer Stadion. Not only has the ground hosted 1. FC Köln for more than 100 years, also it has been used for some of the biggest football events in European history. The stadium was rebuilt between 2002 and 2004 and reopened with a capacity of 50.000 for club matches. This renovation removed the old athletics track and brought supporters much closer to the pitch than before. Also the four steep stands give the RheinEnergieStadion a compact and very intense feel on matchdays. In the 2025-26 season, the average home attendance was 49.907, meaning almost every home match was sold out. When a full RheinEnergieStadion is in voice, it is one of the loudest and most impressive atmospheres in the Bundesliga. You will feel this from the moment you take seat in any part of the ground.
Best way to travel to the RheinEnergieStadion
When you’ve booked your 1. FC Köln tickets it’s time to find out how you can get to the stadium. The RheinEnergieStadion is located in the Sportpark Müngersdorf district, around 5 kilometres west of Cologne city centre. These are the options you have to get to the ground.
By Stadtbahn (Light Rail)
The Cologne Stadtbahn is the best and most direct way to reach the RheinEnergieStadion on matchdays. Line 1 stops directly at the RheinEnergieStadion station, which is right next to the ground. From Cologne Hauptbahnhof the journey by Stadtbahn takes around 20 minutes. On matchdays extra trains are added and the service runs with higher frequency. Not only is this the fastest option from the city centre, also it avoids all the traffic around the stadium in the last hour before kick-off. The return journey after the match is also well organised, with extra services running until all supporters have left the stadium area. When you arrive in Cologne by train and want to get to the stadium, the Stadtbahn from Hauptbahnhof is by far the most recommended option.
By Train
Cologne Hauptbahnhof is one of the best-connected train stations in Germany, with direct services from Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Bonn, Aachen, Stuttgart and many other cities. Also from Amsterdam and Brussels, international trains arrive in Cologne regularly throughout the day. From Hauptbahnhof you take the Stadtbahn as described above. On derby matchdays against Borussia Mönchengladbach the train connections from both directions are very busy. Not only do Köln supporters travel from all over the region to the match, also visiting fans come in large numbers by train on these occasions. It is worth booking your train ticket in advance on the biggest fixture days of the season.
By Car
The RheinEnergieStadion is accessible from the A1 motorway, with the Cologne Beltway (Kölner Ring) bringing you within 1.200 metres of the stadium. Several car parks are available in and around the Sportpark Müngersdorf. On matchdays you need to count on significant traffic in the area around the stadium in the 45 minutes before kick-off. Also the roads after the final whistle can be very busy when the stadium is sold out. Not only is parking limited in the immediate area, also the return journey can take considerable time when 50.000 supporters leave the ground at the same time. The Stadtbahn from the city centre is a much more relaxed option on most matchdays.
By Bicycle
Cologne has a good cycling infrastructure and the RheinEnergieStadion is reachable by bicycle from the city centre in around 30 minutes along the Aachener Straße. Bicycle parking you will find in good numbers around the stadium on matchdays. Not only do you avoid all the matchday traffic by cycling, also the approach through the residential streets of western Cologne is a very pleasant way to reach the ground. Also from the areas of Braunsfeld and Müngersdorf directly surrounding the stadium, the cycling distance is very short.
RheinEnergieStadion guide
The RheinEnergieStadion has four stands. Since the 2004 renovation removed the athletics track, all four stands are very close to the pitch. The 50.000 places are divided between the Haupttribüne, the Gegengerade, the Nordkurve and the Südkurve.
Haupttribüne (West Stand)
The Haupttribüne is the main stand of the RheinEnergieStadion, running along the west side of the pitch. This is where you will find the press area, the VIP boxes and the most comfortable seating in the whole stadium. The club museum is also located in this part of the ground. From the Haupttribüne you will have a very good overview along the full length of the pitch and of all four stands. Also the roof gives reliable protection from the weather, which in Cologne can change very fast between the autumn and winter months of the Bundesliga season. On the biggest matchdays you will feel the noise from all three other stands coming at you very clearly from the Haupttribüne.
Gegengerade (East Stand)
On the opposite site of the Haupttribüne, you will find the Gegengerade. Also this stand gives a very good view along the full length of the pitch. The Gegengerade is a popular choice for regular supporters who want a central view at a fair price. From the Gegengerade you will have a full overview of the Haupttribüne across the pitch and both end stands to your left and right. Also this position gives you one of the best perspectives on the whole stadium when the RheinEnergieStadion is sold out and all four stands are in full voice. On the biggest matchdays, including the Rhine Derby against Borussia Mönchengladbach, you will feel the full atmosphere from this stand very directly.
Nordkurve (North Stand)
The Nordkurve is where you will find the most passionate 1. FC Köln supporters. The ultras and the most active home fans take seat in the standing section of the Nordkurve, where the atmosphere is more intense than anywhere else in the RheinEnergieStadion. The singing starts from the first minute and rarely stops before the final whistle. When Köln score, you will feel the Nordkurve lift the whole stadium in a way that is very immediate and very loud. Not only does the Nordkurve create the atmosphere, also it is from here that the visual choreographies come on the biggest matchdays of the season. Also the sheer size of the noise from the Nordkurve is something you will feel physically when you are inside the stadium. It is one of the best football atmospheres in Germany.
Südkurve (South Stand)
On the opposite site of the Nordkurve, you will find the Südkurve. Also this stand has strong home support in the main sections, with the away fans placed in a clearly separated block in the south section of the stand. From the Südkurve you will get a very good view across the full pitch and of both the Haupttribüne and the Gegengerade. Also on the biggest Bundesliga matchdays you will feel the atmosphere from the Nordkurve very clearly from this position. For supporters who want to be in the end stands without being in the most intense part of the stadium, the home sections of the Südkurve are a very good option.
Which stand should you choose?
Not every stand gives you the same experience at the RheinEnergieStadion. We made this table so you can compare all four stands in one quick look. Check what matters to you and you will find the right stand.
| Priority | Best Stand | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Best atmosphere | Nordkurve Standing | Ultras section, loudest part of one of Germany’s loudest stadiums |

Club history
1. FC Köln was founded on 13 February 1948 through the merger of two older Cologne clubs, Kölner BC 01 and SpVgg Sülz 07. Both clubs had already played at the Müngersdorfer Stadion before the merger. The new club went by the name 1. FC Köln and wore the red and white colours that the club still carries today. Also the billy goat became the symbol of the club very early. The first Hennes, a live billy goat, became the official club mascot in 1950. Nothing very special happened in the first years. The Bundesliga started in 1963. Then something remarkable happened. In the very first season of the Bundesliga, 1963-64, 1. FC Köln won the title. Champions in year one. Not only did they win the first Bundesliga title in the club’s history, also this set a standard that the whole city of Cologne would come to expect. Then came 1978. That was the greatest year in the club’s history. Köln won the Bundesliga title and the DFB-Pokal in the same season. The Double. Not only was this the peak of what the club had achieved, also the squad from that era had some of the best German players of their generation, including Heinz Flohe, Dieter Müller, Harald Schumacher and Karl-Heinz Förster. In 1986, Köln reached the UEFA Cup final. They lost to Real Madrid. A very painful result, but still a very proud moment for the club. The years after had their difficult periods. Köln were relegated from the Bundesliga a number of times. But they always came back. In the 2024-25 season, Köln won promotion from the 2. Bundesliga back to the top flight. On 31 August 2025, they showed exactly what they were capable of, beating SC Freiburg 4-1 at home on the second matchday of the season. Said El Mala finished the 2025-26 campaign as top scorer with 11 goals. Lukas Kwasniok started the season as head coach and guided the club through the first part of the Bundesliga campaign. In March 2026 Kwasniok left the club and René Wagner took over as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Köln finished in 14th place. Secure. The RheinEnergieStadion was sold out for nearly every home match throughout the season.
German influences
1. FC Köln has a very deep connection to the city and the people of Cologne. Cologne is one of the most important cities in German history. The Romans founded it around 50 AD as Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium, which is where the name Köln comes from. The Kölner Dom, the famous Cologne Cathedral, is one of the most recognisable buildings in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It stands directly next to the Hauptbahnhof and is visible from many parts of the city. The club reflects the character of Cologne. The city is proud, loud and very loyal to its own. Not only is the RheinEnergieStadion filled to capacity almost every matchday, also the fanbase of 1. FC Köln is one of the largest in Germany with members and supporters all over the country. The billy goat Hennes, currently in his ninth generation as Hennes IX, still lives at the Cologne Zoo and comes to the stadium on matchdays. Also the club motto “Mer stonn zo üch” in the local Kölsch dialect, which means “We stand with you” in English, shows how close the bond is between the club and the people of Cologne. Captain Marvin Schwäbe, the goalkeeper who wears the armband with great presence and leadership, embodies the fighting spirit that Köln supporters expect from their team. When you come to the RheinEnergieStadion for a match, you will feel quite fast that this is one of the most special football environments in Germany.
1. FC Köln Honours & Trophies
1. FC Köln have two Bundesliga titles and four DFB-Pokal wins, including the famous Double of 1978 when they won both trophies in the same season. For a club from a city of 1.1 million people in the heart of Germany, this is a history that the whole region is very proud of. Not only are these numbers impressive, also the UEFA Cup final appearance in 1986 shows that Köln has competed at the very highest level of European football. Cheap and premium 1. Rivalries
Main Rivals
Rhine Derby against Borussia Mönchengladbach
The Rhine Derby against Borussia Mönchengladbach is the most important match in the 1. FC Köln calendar. It is one of the oldest and most intense derbies in German football. The two clubs are only 50 kilometres apart and have been rivals since the early days of the Bundesliga. In the 1970s, both clubs were among the strongest in Germany and their meetings carried extra weight. Ask any Köln supporter what the most important match of the season is and the answer is always the same. The Rhine Derby. When Köln and Gladbach meet, you will feel a very different kind of atmosphere at the RheinEnergieStadion from the very first minute. Not only do supporters from both sides follow this match very closely, also the rivalry goes back through generations of families in the Rhine region. Also on matchdays when Köln travel to the BORUSSIA-PARK in Mönchengladbach, a very large number of Köln supporters make the short journey for one of the most intensely contested fixtures in German football.
Minor Rivalries
Rivalry with Fortuna Düsseldorf
The rivalry with Fortuna Düsseldorf is another important one for Köln supporters. Both clubs come from the Rhine region and when they are in the same division, the fixture carries a strong local pride. The two cities of Cologne and Düsseldorf have a playful rivalry that goes beyond football, and when the two clubs meet on the pitch this always comes through in the atmosphere. Not only is there a sporting competition, also the friendly but fierce rivalry between the two Rhineland cities makes these matches more than just a regular Bundesliga fixture.
Rivalry with Bayer Leverkusen
The match against Bayer Leverkusen is also very significant for Köln supporters. Both clubs come from the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia and meet as the two Bundesliga representatives from the greater Cologne–Leverkusen area. When Köln and Leverkusen play, you will find a stadium completely filled with supporters who take this fixture very personally. Not only does the geographical closeness between the two clubs make this a real derby, also the very different histories and identities of the two clubs give the rivalry a very specific character that regular Bundesliga supporters always look forward to.
