Stadium information
Name:
Signal Iduna Park
Capacity:
81,365
Address:
Strobelallee 50, 44139 Dortmund, Germany
Description:
The Signal Iduna Park, known for most of its existence as the Westfalenstadion, is the biggest stadium in Germany and one of the most famous football arenas in the world. It was opened on 2 April 1974, when Borussia Dortmund played Schalke 04 in front of a sold-out crowd of 54,000. Since then it has been expanded several times, and the stadium now holds 81,365 spectators. The Westfalenstadion became famous around Europe because of its unique atmosphere, and in particular because of the Gelbe Wand.
Best way to travel to Signal Iduna Park
When you’ve booked your Borussia Dortmund tickets it’s time to find out how you can get to the stadium. The club advises everybody to take public transport. These are the options you can use to get to the Signal Iduna Park.
By U-Bahn
The U46 is the fastest and most direct way to reach Signal Iduna Park. Take the U46 from Dortmund Hauptbahnhof and get off at “Signal Iduna Park” station. The journey takes around 10 minutes. You will find the stadium immediately when you exit the tram. On matchdays you will see thousands of fans in yellow and black walking in the same direction. It is almost impossible to get lost.
By S-Bahn
The S1 line also stops directly at Signal Iduna Park station. This line connects Dortmund with several cities in the Ruhr area including Essen and Düsseldorf, so it is a very useful option if you’re travelling from outside Dortmund. From the main station the journey is around 8 minutes. After the match, expect to wait for a train or two before you get on — it fills up fast after the final whistle.
By Bus
Several bus lines also serve the area around the stadium. On matchdays the city of Dortmund always puts extra services on all public transport. Bus is the best choice for fans staying in the south or west of the city where the U-Bahn connection is less direct. Check the Dortmund VRR app before you go so you know your best route.
By Bicycle
Cycling to Signal Iduna Park is a popular choice. Dortmund has dedicated cycle paths in most parts of the city. The stadium is well connected to the city’s cycling network and you will find large bicycle parking areas just outside the ground. On the bicycle you’ve got all the freedom you need. You can surpass traffic jams and avoid crowded public transport after the match.
Signal Iduna Park guide
Signal Iduna Park is not only the biggest stadium in Germany, it is also widely regarded as the loudest. The 81,365 seats and standing places are always sold out. That’s where we come in, we’ve got you covered with tickets for every single Borussia Dortmund match. The stadium is divided into four main stands: the Südtribüne, the Nordtribüne, the East Stand and the West Stand.
Südtribüne (Yellow Wall)
The Südtribüne is the most famous stand in German football. Also known as the Gelbe Wand or Yellow Wall, it is the largest standing terrace in European club football, with 25,000 standing places. The noise that comes from the Südtribüne during a Borussia Dortmund match is unlike anything you will find in any other stadium in Europe. This is the place where the real BVB fans take seat. When you want to experience the very best of German football culture, you need to look for Südtribüne tickets. The stand is located behind the south goal. Whenever Dortmund play towards this goal, you will feel the energy building up in a way that is truly unforgettable.
Nordtribüne (North Stand)
On the opposite site of the Südtribüne, you will find the Nordtribüne. Also this stand has a standing section and is known for its strong Dortmund home following. Away fans are not placed in the Nordtribüne — they are housed in the upper tier of the West Stand. During Der Klassiker against Bayern München, you will feel the intensity radiating from the Nordtribüne across the whole stadium.
East Stand (Haupttribüne)
Along the side of the pitch you will find the Haupttribüne, the main stand of Signal Iduna Park. This stand offers excellent sightlines across the entire pitch. For the business class experience you can take seat in the middle tier. In the East Stand it’s a bit more about the luxury and a bit less about the football atmosphere. But you know for sure you will have the best view in the stadium. The East Stand is also where you will find the press box and the majority of the corporate hospitality areas.
West Stand
On the opposite side of the Haupttribüne you will find the West Stand. Also this stand has great sightlines across the whole pitch. It’s a bit quieter than the Südtribüne and Nordtribüne, which makes it a good choice for first-time visitors who want to take in the whole Signal Iduna Park experience without being in the middle of the most intense sections. Away fans are housed in the upper tier of the West Stand, on the far side from the tunnel.
Which stand should you choose?
It’s important to be able to make the best decision when booking your Borussia Dortmund tickets. That’s why we’ve created this table with a quick comparison about all four stands. Check what’s important to you and you will find the best stand for your wishes.

Club history
Borussia Dortmund was founded on 19 December 1909, when a group of young men from the Trinity parish in Dortmund decided to break away from their local church-run sports club and form a football team of their own. They chose black and yellow as their colours right from the very start. The club grew steadily over the following decades and became a real force in German football after the Second World War. The name “Borussia” is a Latin word for Prussia, and you will find this name used by several German clubs. But when people say Borussia, most football fans around the world know exactly which club they mean.
German influences
Borussia Dortmund is as German as it gets. The Ruhrgebiet connection runs very deep at this club. Not only the fans are deeply rooted in the industrial heritage of the region, also the players have often come through the own academy. With Julian Brandt, Karim Adeyemi and Aleksandar Pavlovic — who spent time at BVB — German talent has always been central to this club. The academy system at Dortmund is one of the most productive in European football and has produced several full internationals. Marco Reus, who served the club for over a decade, is perhaps the most iconic German Dortmund player of recent times. He left in the summer of 2024, but his legacy at Signal Iduna Park will last for generations.

Rivalries
Main Rivals
Der Klassiker against Bayern München
Der Klassiker between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern München is one of the biggest football matches in the world. The rivalry really took off during the 1990s when Dortmund started winning Bundesliga titles and challenging Bayern’s dominance. It reached its absolute peak in the 2011-2012 season, when Dortmund won the title and both clubs met in the 2013 Champions League final at Wembley on 25 May 2013. Bayern won that final 2–1 with a goal from Arjen Robben. Bayern lead the all-time head-to-head, but whenever these two clubs meet, every other result in the Bundesliga becomes irrelevant.
Minor Rivalries
Revierderby against Schalke 04
The Revierderby between Borussia Dortmund and Schalke 04 is the most intense local derby in German football. These two clubs come from the same region of the Ruhrgebiet, separated by only around 30 kilometres, and the rivalry goes back more than 100 years. Both clubs were built on the working-class communities of the coal and steel industry. Schalke have spent recent seasons outside the Bundesliga, but whenever they return, the Revierderby comes back with it. In the derby, the normal rules of football don’t apply. Every single tackle, every single goal, every single result carries a weight that no other Bundesliga fixture can match.
Rivalry with Werder Bremen
The rivalry between Dortmund and Werder Bremen is less intense than the two derbies above, but it still carries historical significance. Both clubs competed for the Bundesliga title several times in the 1990s and early 2000s. The fixture always carries an edge, particularly when both clubs are competing for a European place. It is a rivalry built on mutual respect between two clubs who see themselves as the alternative to Bayern München’s dominance.
