Hertha BSC
Two German championships, a Champions League campaign in 1999 and a home ground that seats 74,649. Hertha have been out of the Bundesliga since 2023 and the Olympiastadion is still the biggest stage in the division by a distance. On a full matchday there is nothing else like it at this level anywhere in Europe.
1. FC Kaiserslautern
Four German championships, and the only club ever to win the Bundesliga the season immediately after being promoted, in 1998. The Fritz-Walter-Stadion sits on the Betzenberg above the town, holds 49,327 and remains one of the most intimidating away days in German football.
1. FC Nürnberg
Nine German championships, more than any club except Bayern Munich, though the last of them came in 1968. The Max-Morlock-Stadion holds 49,923 and the club has now spent eight consecutive seasons in the second tier, the longest current run in the division alongside Hannover 96 and Karlsruher SC.
VfL Wolfsburg
Bundesliga champions in 2009 and German cup winners in 2015, Wolfsburg were relegated from the top flight for the first time in their history at the end of 2025/26. Their presence, together with Hannover 96, Eintracht Braunschweig and VfL Osnabrück, means the 2026-2027 2. Bundesliga has four clubs from Lower Saxony while the Bundesliga has none, for the first time since 1996/97.
The derbies
- Franconian derby: 1. FC Nürnberg v SpVgg Greuther Fürth, one of the oldest and most bitter rivalries in German football, with the two grounds barely ten kilometres apart

What is at stake
The top two go up automatically. Third place enters a two-legged play-off against the club that finishes sixteenth in the Bundesliga. At the other end, the bottom two drop into the 3. Liga and sixteenth place plays off against the third-placed club from that division. In 2026-2027 those play-offs fall on 28 May and 1 June 2027.

The league itself
The 2. Bundesliga was founded in 1974 as two regional divisions, Nord and Süd, and became a single nationwide league in 1981. The 3. Liga was introduced below it in 2008, and the promotion and relegation play-offs against the divisions above and below returned with it. Fifty-three seasons in, the division has developed a character of its own: full grounds, standing terraces, low ticket prices and a promotion race that regularly goes to the final matchday.

Germany kept its terraces when England removed theirs, and it kept its prices low when most of Europe raised theirs. Format
Eighteen clubs play each other twice, home and away, for 34 matchdays and 306 matches in total. There are no conferences and no play-off system for the title: the club at the top on the final matchday is champion of the division and goes up. Second place goes up automatically alongside them, and third place enters the promotion play-off.
The season calendar
The 2026-2027 season began on 7 August 2026, three weeks before the Bundesliga, and runs to 23 May 2027. Matchday 16 on 20 December 2026 is the last before the winter break, with play resuming on 15 January 2027. That break is one of the reasons a January trip to Germany needs checking against the calendar before you book flights.
When matches are played
Fixtures are spread across Friday evening, Saturday afternoon, the Saturday evening Top-Spiel at 20:30 and Sunday. The Saturday evening match is shown live on free-to-air television in Germany, and selections are usually confirmed several weeks ahead. Kick-off times for later matchdays are frequently still open when tickets first go on sale.
Tickets, terraces and matchday
Most grounds in the division keep large standing terraces, which are the cheapest tickets in the stadium and almost never reach general sale. Seated areas are where visitors realistically end up, and they are still inexpensive by the standards of England, Spain or Italy. Many clubs include local public transport in the ticket, though the rules differ by city, so check the club page before you buy a separate travel ticket. German grounds are increasingly cashless, usually operating a stadium card for food and drink.
