Stadium Information
Name:
Stadium of Light
Capacity:
49,000
Address:
Stadium of Light, Monkwearmouth, Sunderland SR5 1SU, United Kingdom
Description:
The Stadium of Light has been Sunderland's home since 1997, when the club moved from its historic former ground, Roker Park. With a capacity of 49,000 it is one of the largest stadiums in England, built on the site of a former colliery on the north bank of the River Wear, and a monument to the mining heritage stands proudly outside. On a big night, with the home crowd in full voice, it is one of the most atmospheric grounds in the country.
The Best Way to Travel to the Stadium of Light
Once you've booked your Sunderland tickets, it's time to figure out how to get to the Stadium of Light. The ground sits just north of Sunderland city centre, across the River Wear, and is very well connected. Here are the best options for a matchday visit.
By Metro
The Tyne and Wear Metro, services the region and therefore also Sunderland. The metro has a decicated Stadium of Light Station. This is located around five minutes walk to the stadium. This is one of the easist ways to reach the ground!
By Train
Also the railway station is within walking distance of the stadium. The main railway station is a roughly 15 minutes walk to the stadium. It's served by national rail and metro services.
By Bus
It's also possible to get to the stadium by bus. Several local bus routes have stops near the stadium. Services run from Sunderland city centre and the surrounding area.
By Car
The postcode for your sat nav is SR5 1SU. There is parking around the stadium, but spaces fill up quickly on matchdays, so it's best to arrive early. Where possible we recommend using the Metro or train instead, as the roads around the ground get very busy.
Stadium of Light Guide
The Stadium of Light has four stands: the West Stand, the East Stand, the North Stand, and the South Stand (the Roker End). Each has its own character, and your matchday experience will be different in each one. In this section we explain a little bit about each stand and what you can expect from booking your Sunderland tickets for that specific stand.
West Stand
Running along one side of the pitch, the West Stand is the main stand and the largest at the ground. It houses the players' tunnel and dugouts, the directors' box, the media facilities and the bulk of the corporate boxes and executive lounges, so it's the most comfortable place to watch a match and offers the classic side-on view.
East Stand
Opposite the West Stand, the two-tier East Stand faces the dugouts and offers some of the best, most unobstructed views in the ground. It's a popular choice for families and for fans who want a clear view of the action, and it's often the setting for the club's big choreographed displays.
South Stand (Roker End)
Behind one goal sits the South Stand, also known as the Roker End, the spiritual home of the loudest Sunderland support. The south-west corner is where the singing starts and the noise is at its strongest. If you want to be in the thick of the atmosphere, this is the stand for you.
North Stand
Behind the opposite goal is the two-tier North Stand, which was extended in 2000 to mirror the West Stand. It gives good views from behind the goal, and visiting supporters are housed high up in the upper tier of this stand.
Which Stand Should You Choose?
It's important to be able to make the best decision when booking your Sunderland tickets. That's why we created this table with a quick comparison of all four stands. Check what matters most to you and you'll find the stand that fits what you're after.
| Priority | Best Stand | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Best atmosphere | South Stand (Roker End) | The home of the loudest support, where the singing begins |
| Best view | East Stand | Unobstructed views facing the dugouts |
| First visit | West or East Stand | A good balance of atmosphere and views |
| Hospitality | West Stand | Directors' box, corporate boxes and executive lounges |
| Families | East Stand | A calmer area with clear views of the action |
| Visiting fans | North Stand | Upper tier, behind the goal |

Other Information
Sunderland are one of English football's grand old clubs, founded in 1879 and nicknamed the Black Cats. The club has been a dominant force in the game's early decaded. They won six league titles and two FA Cups, though the modern era has been a rollercoaster that took them as far down as League One. It has always been a big club in the region, but when Netflix launched Sunderland Till I die, the fame rose all over the World. The idea of the documentary was to follow a related club on its way back to the Premier League. Instead the club got immediately relegated from the Championship. After years in the lower leagues, the club is back in the Premier League.
English influences
The history of Sunderland FC is one filled with English influences. Local lad Raich Csrter, was the forward which drove the club the league title in the 1935-1936 season. Kevin Phillips led his club decaded later, earning the European Golden Boto in 1999-2000. Jordan Pickford is one of the latest English internationals who came through the ranks at Southampton.
Sunderland Honours & Trophies
Sunderland have a proud and storied history in English football, and although the biggest honours came in the game's earlier decades, the club remains one of the most successful in the country. This is a list of the major honours they've won.

Rivalries
Main Rivalry
Newcastle United
The Tyne–Wear derby against Newcastle United, is a derby that has been played since 1998. This debry is one of the fiercest rivalries in English football. Rooted in geography, history and intense local pride, it's a fixture watched closely across the country – and one Sunderland fans savoured all the more after completing a league double over their neighbours in 2025/26. After spending some years in Championship and below, it was a huge achievement to get back in the Premier League and immediately win the Tyne Wear derby twice.
Minor Rivalry
Middlesbrough
Though not as intense as the Newcastle rivalry, matches against Middlesbrough still carry plenty of weight, with the two clubs competing for North East bragging rights whenever they meet.
