Association de la Jeunesse Auxerroise, known as AJ Auxerre or simply l'AJA, was founded in 1905 and is based in Auxerre, in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of central France. The club plays in white and blue and is nicknamed Les Ajaïstes. For a town of its size, Auxerre has a remarkable footballing history, and is owned by James Zhou, with Baptiste Malherbe as president.

Auxerre's story is tied to Guy Roux, who managed the club for more than four decades and took them from the amateur game all the way to the top of French football. The high point came in 1995-96, when Auxerre won both the Ligue 1 title and the Coupe de France, a league and cup double that remains one of the great underdog stories in the French game. Through the 1990s and 2000s the club were regulars in European competition, reaching the quarter finals of the Champions League in 1997.
