World Cup 2026 Starts in One Week

June 4th, 2026 20:57

The 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off on 11 June at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City — and if you are reading this, you have approximately seven days to get yourself organised. Whether you have tickets and just need to finalise the details, or you are still deciding whether to make the trip at all, this guide covers everything you need to action right now. No fluff, no long introductions — just the practical checklist that stands between you and the biggest sporting event on earth.

1. Tickets — What Is Still Available

The most important thing to know: tickets for World Cup 2026 matches are still available. Not for every match, and not at every price point — but if you want to be inside a stadium this summer, it is not too late. World Cup 2026 tickets are available across multiple host cities and stages, including group stage matches that kick off on 11 June.

Group stage tickets generally offer better availability than knockout rounds and represent the best value entry point for last-minute buyers. If your primary goal is experiencing the World Cup atmosphere in person — the noise, the colour, the global crowd — a group stage match delivers exactly that. The quality of the football in the opening round is high, the stadiums are full, and tickets are still accessible at this stage.

Knockout round availability is tighter. Fixtures involving major footballing nations — England, Brazil, France, Argentina — are the most in-demand. If you have flexibility on which match to attend, comparing availability across several fixtures gives you the best chance of finding something that fits your budget. And for fans whose dream is the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on 19 July, World Cup Final tickets are still available — though at this stage of the competition, availability is limited and will not last.

The key practical point: purchase tickets as early today as possible. With one week to go, demand is at its peak and inventory is moving fast. Waiting even 24 hours can mean losing availability at your preferred fixture.

2. ESTA — Apply Today If You Have Not Already

If you are a British or European citizen travelling to the United States for World Cup matches, you need an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) before you board your flight. This is not optional and airlines will not allow you to board without a valid, approved ESTA for US entry.

The good news: most ESTA applications are approved within minutes, though the official window is up to 72 hours. Apply today at the official US government website — esta.cbp.dhs.gov — and you will almost certainly have your approval before the end of the day. The cost is $21 and the application takes around 10 minutes to complete. Once approved, your ESTA is valid for two years.

Do not leave this until the day before you fly. The 72-hour processing window is the official guidance from CBP, and some applications are flagged for additional checks that take the full three days. If your flight is in the next 72 hours and you have not yet applied, go to esta.cbp.dhs.gov right now before reading the rest of this article.

For travel to Canada (Toronto or Vancouver fixtures), you need a separate Canadian eTA — also a quick online process at canada.ca, costing CAD $7 and usually approved within minutes. Your US ESTA does not cover Canadian entry.

3. Flights — What Can Still Be Booked

Direct transatlantic flights from the UK to the main US World Cup cities — New York, Miami, Dallas, Houston, Boston — are still available for most dates in June and July, but prices have risen significantly as the tournament approaches. At this stage, expect to pay premium fares for peak dates around major fixtures.

Practical tips for last-minute flight booking:

  • Be flexible on airports. New York has three airports — JFK, Newark and LaGuardia. Newark is often cheaper and is actually closer to MetLife Stadium than JFK. Dallas is served by both DFW and Dallas Love Field (Southwest). Houston has both IAH and HOU.
  • Check indirect routes. A connection via Reykjavik (Icelandair), Dublin (Aer Lingus connecting via US partners) or Amsterdam can sometimes undercut direct prices significantly.
  • Book one way if your return date is flexible. Locking in your outbound now and leaving the return open gives you flexibility to follow the tournament further if England or another team progresses.
  • Consider flying into a cheaper nearby city. Flying into Philadelphia and taking Amtrak to New York (90 minutes, from $20) can be significantly cheaper than flying directly into JFK or Newark on peak dates.

4. Accommodation — Act Fast on This One

Hotels in host cities around major fixture dates are moving fast. In New York, Miami and Dallas in particular, properties close to the stadiums or in central neighbourhoods are either sold out or at significantly elevated rates for World Cup peak dates. That said, availability does still exist — especially if you are willing to stay slightly further from the city centre and use public transport.

Practical advice for last-minute accommodation:

  • Prioritise flexible/refundable rates. With one week to go, booking a refundable room now and continuing to search for better options gives you a safety net without locking you in.
  • Consider Airbnb and apartment rentals. Hotel inventory is tighter than apartment inventory in most host cities. Apartments also give you a kitchen — useful for managing costs in expensive US cities.
  • Stay near public transport, not near the stadium. Stadium-adjacent hotels are the first to sell out and often the most expensive. Staying downtown with a straightforward public transport or rideshare route to the venue is typically better value and more enjoyable.
  • Multi-night stays work in your favour. Hotels often have better per-night availability for longer stays. If your match is on a Thursday, booking Wednesday to Saturday sometimes opens up rooms that single-night Friday bookings cannot find.

5. Passport — Check It Right Now

Before anything else, check your passport expiry date. Most countries recommend at least six months of validity beyond your return travel date for US entry. If your passport expires before December 2026, apply for a renewal immediately — routine UK passport processing currently takes four to six weeks, and expedited processing takes two to three weeks. If your trip is within the next two weeks and your passport is close to expiry, contact the Passport Office directly about emergency appointments.

Also check that the name on your passport exactly matches the name on your flight booking and your match tickets. Discrepancies at border control can cause serious delays — sort any issues now, not at the airport.

6. How the World Cup 2026 Works — A Quick Guide for First-Timers

If this is your first World Cup, here is the format in brief. 48 teams are split into 12 groups of four. Each team plays three group stage matches — 11 to 27 June. The top two from each group, plus the eight best third-placed teams, advance to the Round of 32 (new to 2026). The tournament then follows a single-elimination knockout format through the Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final on 19 July.

The key practical implication: group stage tickets are fixed (you know exactly which teams are playing). Knockout round tickets are sold by match slot — you know the venue and date but not the teams until the group stage is complete. If you are buying a Round of 32 or Round of 16 ticket, you are buying the occasion and the atmosphere, not necessarily a specific team.

7. The First Week of Fixtures — Key Matches to Target

The first seven days of the tournament — 11 to 17 June — produce some of the most anticipated fixtures of the entire group stage. Here are the standout matches in the opening week:

  • 11 June — Mexico vs South Africa, Estadio Azteca, Mexico City. The tournament opener. History made as the Azteca becomes the first stadium to host three World Cups.
  • 13 June — Brazil vs Morocco, MetLife Stadium, New York New Jersey. Two of the tournament's most supported nations in the world's greatest city.
  • 14 June — Netherlands vs Japan, Dallas Stadium. European quality against Asia's most dangerous side.
  • 15 June — Spain vs Cape Verde, Atlanta. The world's top-ranked team opens their campaign. Belgium vs Egypt in Seattle on the same day.
  • 16 June — France vs Senegal, MetLife Stadium. Mbappe vs Africa's champions in New York.
  • 17 June — England vs Croatia, Dallas Stadium. The 2018 semi-final rematch. The biggest match of the opening week for the UK market.

8. Watching at Home — TV and Streaming

Not travelling but still want to follow every match? World Cup 2026 is broadcast free-to-air in the UK across ITV and BBC, with both broadcasters sharing coverage of all 104 matches. ITV Hub and BBC iPlayer provide free streaming for UK-based viewers. In the Netherlands, NPO covers matches. Across Europe, a mix of public broadcasters and paid streaming platforms carry the tournament — check your national broadcaster for specific rights.

Key timing note for UK viewers: most group stage matches kick off at 3:00 PM, 6:00 PM or 9:00 PM local US time — meaning UK kick-off times run from 8:00 PM to 2:00 AM BST for evening fixtures in the Eastern timezone. The England vs Croatia match on 17 June kicks off at 4:00 PM ET — 9:00 PM BST — a manageable evening for UK fans watching from home.
