Houston is one of the most compelling host cities in the entire World Cup 2026 lineup. America's most diverse city — home to over 2.3 million people and more than 145 languages, will welcome football fans from every corner of the world this summer as NRG Stadium stages five matches across the group stage, a Round of 32 and a Round of 16. That is seven matches in total, making Houston one of the busiest and most significant venues in the tournament. And with fixtures featuring Germany, Netherlands and Portugal among the headliners, the quality on offer is exceptional.

This guide covers the full fixture schedule, the groups and teams playing in Houston, the storylines to follow, and what to expect inside NRG Stadium on match day. Houston's World Cup 2026 Match Schedule at NRG Stadium

NRG Stadium hosts matches from three different groups in the group stage, plus two knockout round fixtures. The confirmed schedule is as follows:

  • 14 June — Germany vs Curaçao, Group E (1:00 PM EST)
  • 20 June — Group F: Netherlands vs Sweden (or Sweden vs Netherlands depending on draw allocation)
  • 23 June — Group K: Portugal vs Uzbekistan
  • 29 June — Round of 32: 1st Group C vs 2nd Group F
  • 4 July — Round of 16

The breadth of nations playing in Houston is remarkable — German efficiency, Dutch attacking football and Portuguese flair all arriving at the same venue across a ten-day stretch. For fans who can extend their stay in Houston across multiple match days, the opportunity to see three of world football's most iconic nations play in the same stadium is difficult to replicate anywhere else on the World Cup circuit. Group E in Houston: Germany's Opening Test Against History-Making Curaçao

Germany's World Cup campaign begins at NRG Stadium on 14 June against Curaçao — and the contrast between the two nations tells one of the tournament's great opening stories.

Germany — Hungry to Reclaim the Trophy

Germany have not won a World Cup since 2014 and arrive at 2026 carrying the weight of two difficult tournament exits — eliminated at the group stage in Russia 2018 and beaten in the round of 16 in Qatar 2022. Under Julian Nagelsmann, there are signs of a rejuvenated side capable of a deep run, with a strong generation of talent combining experienced campaigners and hungry younger players. Their opening fixture against Curaçao should produce goals, but Germany will be using it to find rhythm and build confidence ahead of tougher Group E tests against Ecuador and Ivory Coast. A fast, commanding start is exactly what Germany need — and Houston's crowd, which has one of the largest German-American communities in Texas, will give them vocal support.

Curaçao — Making World Cup History

Curaçao's presence at World Cup 2026 is genuinely historic. The small Caribbean island — population approximately 160,000 — has never played at a World Cup before, making this a debut appearance on the grandest possible stage. Their route to qualification was extraordinary, navigating CONCACAF with a squad built largely of players of Dutch heritage competing in the Eredivisie and other European leagues. For Curaçao fans, the journey to Houston on 14 June to watch their team face Germany in a World Cup group match is the realisation of something that would have seemed impossible a decade ago. Whatever happens on the pitch, their presence is a celebration of what football can produce.

Ecuador and Ivory Coast Complete Group E

Ecuador arrive in North America as one of South America's most consistent qualifiers in recent cycles, with physical, well-organised football and dangerous set-piece delivery. Ivory Coast, meanwhile, bring a golden generation of talent including Sébastien Haller and Franck Kessié — African Cup of Nations winners in 2023 — who will make Group E genuinely competitive. Germany are clear favourites to top the group, but the fight for second place between Ecuador and Ivory Coast promises to be tightly contested.

Group F in Houston: Netherlands vs Sweden — A Crucial European Clash

Group F brings Netherlands, Japan, Tunisia and Sweden to the tournament, with Houston hosting the decisive European clash between the Dutch and Sweden.

Netherlands — The Attacking Force Looking to Go All the Way

Netherlands enter World Cup 2026 with one of their most balanced squads in years. After reaching the semi-finals at Euro 2024 and with the core of a young, technically gifted generation maturing at club level across Europe, the Dutch are genuine contenders. Cody Gakpo, Xavi Simons and a strong defensive base give them the tools to beat anyone on their day. Playing in Houston — where the Dutch presence in the fanbase will be sizeable — they will be expected to top Group F and progress comfortably into the knockout rounds.

Sweden — Arriving on Form

Sweden arrive at their first World Cup since 2018 having come through the UEFA playoffs, defeating Poland in a competitive two-legged tie. They are a structured, physically imposing side with experienced players throughout, and should not be underestimated in a group where second place is there to be claimed. The Netherlands vs Sweden fixture in Houston is likely to be one of the defining matches of the group stage in terms of deciding who accompanies the Dutch into the knockout rounds.

Japan and Tunisia Round Out the Group

Japan are Asia's most consistent World Cup performers and arrive as the wild card of Group F, having defeated Germany and Spain in Qatar 2022 before an agonising round of 16 exit. With Takefusa Kubo and a generation of players performing at the highest level in Europe, Japan cannot be written off. Tunisia provide quality that made them dangerous in Qatar and will make Group F competitive throughout.

Group K in Houston: Portugal's Spotlight Match

Houston also stages a Group K fixture featuring Portugal against Uzbekistan — and while this may appear on paper to be the most straightforward match in the city's schedule, it carries significant storylines.

Portugal — Can They Finally Win a World Cup?

Portugal arrive at 2026 as one of the tournament's most watched and debated nations. With a squad that blends established quality in Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva and Rúben Dias with an exciting new generation of attackers, the expectation is that this Portugal side has the tools to reach the latter stages. Their World Cup record has been one of consistent underachievement relative to squad quality, but the pieces are in place for a genuine run. A match against Uzbekistan — World Cup debutants in their very first tournament appearance — offers Portugal the chance to set the tone early. The Portuguese fanbase, which is substantial across the Southern USA, will make the atmosphere inside NRG Stadium electric from the first whistle.

Uzbekistan — A Debut on the World Stage

Like Curaçao in Group E, Uzbekistan's presence at World Cup 2026 is historic. The Central Asian nation qualified from the AFC, becoming one of Asia's standout performers in a competitive qualification campaign. Their players compete across Russia, South Korea and increasingly in European leagues, and while they are massive underdogs against Portugal, their debut appearance is a moment for the entire region. Group K also includes Colombia and DR Congo, making it one of the more unpredictable groups in the draw.

NRG Stadium: What the Match Day Experience Is Really Like

NRG Stadium is one of the most impressive football venues on the entire World Cup circuit. Opened in 2002 as the NFL's first retractable-roof stadium, it has a capacity of 72,220 and has hosted two Super Bowls, multiple NCAA Final Fours and major international events. During the World Cup it will be known as Houston Stadium in line with the stadium naming conventions.

The retractable roof is a genuine advantage in Houston's summer climate. June temperatures in the city regularly exceed 90°F (32°C) with high humidity, and for afternoon kick-offs like Germany vs Curaçao at 1:00 PM EST on 14 June, the roof will be closed and the air conditioning fully operational. This makes NRG Stadium one of the most comfortable match day environments in a tournament where some outdoor venues will face intense summer heat. Fans attending Houston fixtures can focus entirely on the football rather than managing heat exhaustion.

Sightlines throughout NRG Stadium are excellent. The lower bowl puts fans close to the pitch, the upper tiers are steeply raked for clear views, and the stadium's massive video screens mean replays and close-up action are visible from every seat. Sound inside a closed-roof NRG Stadium builds to intense levels — the atmosphere for the Germany and Netherlands fixtures in particular will be extraordinary given the size of both nations' travelling fanbases.

NRG Stadium is located in the NRG Park complex in South Main, approximately 5 miles from Downtown Houston. The complex includes NRG Center, NRG Arena and significant open fan zone space that will be activated throughout the World Cup for pre-match entertainment, food trucks and sponsor activations. Security queues at the venue build early on major match days — arriving two hours before kick-off is strongly recommended.

Houston as a Multi-Match Base

Houston's position in the South Central region of the USA makes it a natural base for fans planning to attend multiple matches across different venues. Dallas is approximately 240 miles north — around a 3.5-hour drive or a short domestic flight — and hosts some of the tournament's biggest fixtures including England vs Croatia and the Netherlands vs Japan. Kansas City is a further option to the north.

For fans who want to follow a specific team across multiple group stage matches, Houston's location and connectivity make it an excellent anchor point. A week-long base in Houston with day trips or overnight stays to Dallas covers two of the tournament's most stacked groups cost-effectively, especially given that domestic flights between Houston (IAH or HOU) and Dallas (DFW) run frequently and remain affordable when booked in advance.

Why the Round of 16 in Houston Is Worth Planning Around

Houston's Round of 16 fixture on 4 July adds an extra dimension to what the city offers. A knockout match at NRG Stadium on American Independence Day is a moment with genuine cultural resonance — and if a high-profile nation progresses to face another in a last-16 tie in Houston, the atmosphere inside the closed-roof stadium will be exceptional. For fans not tied to a specific team, targeting a knockout round fixture at NRG Stadium is one of the smartest decisions on the entire World Cup circuit: maximum football quality, maximum atmosphere, in one of the most capable stadium environments in the USA.

I have used Live Football Tickets 3 times now and although I get nervous about not receiving the tickets until the day before the event, they always arrive in time. The system is transparent and user friendly. Tickets easily transfer to Google Wallet for ease of use. We have had great seats to games. The icing on the cake was watching the FA cup final at Wembley with my young teenager and his team won! Well worth it! I would definitely recommend this company and I would use again without hesitation.

There was an issue with a ticket at the turnstile of the stadium. I messaged the customer support number provided and James from LFT replied in minutes. This was then followed by a phone call and everything was sorted by him and me and my family could enjoy the game. Would 100% use again.

First time using “Live Football Tickets” for an event but the reviews were good and Ai told me they were the best 3rd-party site to use. Ticket selection was easy on their site with prices clearly displayed and the transaction perfect. The ticket prices I was willing to purchase were well over face value but I was grateful they were offered. Fees per ticket were high but again, I paid without question. If I had a small complaint it would be that their statement “tickets will be with you within 24 hours of your event start” was not met and so had to email them at t-23 hours. I received a swift and reassuring response from the team (Sam) and that I was to proceed with my travel plans for the event as I was assured the e-tickets would arrive in time and sure enough a few hours later (still a day before the event) they arrived with a request to confirm I’d received them from the same “Sam”, so the continuity of my query was initiated, delivered and followed up by the same team member. I liked that a lot. I would definitely use Live Football Tickets again and have already recommended them to others. They helped make a special day be successful. Thank you.

Bought FA cup final tickets the night before the game. Within an hour links to my tickets arrived by email along with clear instructions about how to download to my wallet - no problems whatsoever. The whole process was smooth. Tickets were obviously over face value but worth it to us. It was my first time using LiveFootballTickets so was initially apprehensive but wouldn’t hesitate again.
