Manchester City Reach FA Cup Final After Dramatic Comeback
Manchester City Reach FA Cup Final After Dramatic Late Comeback Against Southampton
Manchester City are the first team through to the FA Cup Final after a heart-stopping semi-final at Wembley. Pep Guardiola's side came from behind in the closing stages to beat Championship side Southampton 2-1, booking their place in the showpiece on 16 May. The second finalist will be decided on Sunday when Chelsea face Leeds United. FA Cup tickets for the final are already in high demand.
Cautious Start from Guardiola
Guardiola opted for a rotated line-up, leaving Erling Haaland, Bernardo Silva, Marc Guéhi and Gianluigi Donnarumma on the bench from the start. That gave Tijjani Reijnders and Nathan Aké the chance to impress from the off, though neither half produced much in the way of clear-cut chances.
Southampton thought they had broken the deadlock when Léo Scienza found the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside. City's best opportunity of the first half fell to Omar Marmoush, standing in for Haaland, but he was denied by Southampton goalkeeper Daniel Peretz. Reijnders tried his luck with an overhead kick, though he caught the ball poorly and it came to nothing.
Guardiola Throws on the Heavy Artillery
The second half followed a similar pattern, and with the game still goalless Guardiola turned to his bench. Jérémy Doku and Savinho replaced Mateo Kovacic and Phil Foden as City looked to stretch play out wide. When that failed to produce a breakthrough, Haaland and Nico O'Reilly were thrown on with twenty minutes remaining.
City continued to press — nineteen shots at goal by the time the match entered its final ten minutes — but the ball simply would not go in. And then the oldest law in football struck. Finn Aziz stepped back and curled a stunning long-range effort into the top corner to put Southampton 1-0 up. The Championship side were on the verge of a second FA Cup final upset in as many rounds.
Eight Frantic Minutes Settle It
The goal, however, seemed to jolt City into life. Within minutes, Doku's effort was deflected into the net to make it 1-1. Southampton bravely pushed for an immediate response and came close through another long-range strike, but James Trafford got down well to keep it out.
Then came the moment that settled it. Nico González — seemingly inspired by Southampton's willingness to shoot from distance — unleashed a thunderbolt from thirty metres that flew into the net. Manchester City 2-1 Southampton. Reijnders, replaced by Bernardo Silva just two minutes earlier, missed the conclusion from the bench.
City held on to reach the FA Cup Final for the second consecutive season. They will discover their opponents on Sunday when Chelsea take on Leeds United in the second semi-final at Wembley.
