Bayern thrill in seven-goal classic as Arsenal grind through
Two very different nights, two English results. Bayern Munich produced one of the Champions League's great comeback performances to beat Real Madrid 4-3 in a breathless seven-goal thriller, while Arsenal laboured to a goalless draw against Sporting Lisbon that was just enough to see them through to the semi-finals.

Bayern 4–3 Real Madrid: a classic for the ages
If the first leg at the Bernabéu was exhilarating, the return at the Allianz Arena was something else entirely. Seven goals, two red cards, a moment of madness from Manuel Neuer, and a winner curled into the top corner in the dying seconds — Bayern Munich and Real Madrid served up one of the great Champions League nights.
It took precisely 60 seconds for the first goal. Neuer inexplicably surrendered possession near his own area, and Arda Güler — the hero of the first leg too — punished him without hesitation, rolling the ball into an empty net. Real Madrid level on aggregate before the crowd had barely settled.
Bayern hit back immediately. Stole Pavlović met a Kimmich corner with a precise header to make it 1-1, catching Lunin completely wrong-footed. The match was level again, but both sides were playing at an intensity that suggested more goals were inevitable.
They were right. Güler struck again on 29 minutes, this time with a delicate free kick that curled just beyond the outstretched Neuer. Real Madrid 2-1 up on the night, 4-3 ahead on aggregate. Then Harry Kane — coolness personified — equalised on 38 minutes, rolling in his 12th goal of the Champions League season after a clever pass from Upamecano. Before half-time, Mbappé twisted the knife once more, finishing a flowing Real Madrid move with a composed left-footed finish to make it 2-3 at the break. Vicente Kompany was shown a yellow card on the touchline for his protests.
The second half was no less dramatic. Neuer produced a stunning reflex save to deny Mbappé a fourth, and as the clock ticked towards 90 minutes the tie appeared to be heading for extra time. Then came the turning point. Eduardo Camavinga, on as a substitute, collected a second yellow card for time-wasting with the ball in his hands — a moment of extraordinary naivety that reduced Real Madrid to ten men.
Bayern seized on it instantly. Luis Díaz combined with Musiala and fired low into the corner on 89 minutes — 3-3, Bayern ahead on aggregate. Then, deep into stoppage time, Michael Olise curled the most beautiful of finishes into the top corner to seal a 4-3 win and a 6-4 aggregate triumph. The Allianz Arena erupted.
The chaos did not end with the final whistle. Real Madrid players surrounded referee Slavko Vincic in fury. Güler, already substituted, rushed back onto the pitch to protest and was shown a red card — the second dismissal of the night for the visitors after Camavinga's earlier sending off. Bayern, meanwhile, barely noticed. Olise was named man of the match. Vincent Kompany's side will face Champions League holders PSG in the semi-finals.
Arsenal 0–0 Sporting: through, but barely
Across Europe, Arsenal were doing things the hard way. A 0-0 draw was always going to be enough to see them through on the strength of Havertz's goal in Lisbon, but Mikel Arteta's side made it far more uncomfortable than anyone had anticipated.
Sporting came to the Emirates with nothing to lose and played like it. Geny Catamo struck the post in the first half, and defender Mosquera escaped without a penalty despite an apparent push in the area. Maximiliano Araújo curled a second-half effort just past the far post. For long spells, Sporting were the more threatening side — a remarkable statement given the weight of the task they faced.
Arsenal had their own moments. Leandro Trossard clipped the post from a corner late on, and Viktor Gyökeres — making a rare start against his former club — was substituted before the hour mark, replaced by Kai Havertz. Noni Madueke limped off with an apparent knee injury and was replaced by 16-year-old Max Dowman in the closing stages, adding a further anxious note to an already tense evening.
The final moments were the most nerve-shredding of all. Arsenal escaped a Sporting goal deep in stoppage time when João Simões was denied, and referee Vincic — busy on both fronts this evening — brought proceedings to a close. Arsenal through, but only just.
The semi-final draw is now set. Arsenal face Atlético Madrid, while Bayern meet PSG. The first legs take place on 28 or 29 April, with the returns a week later. A place in the Champions League final in Budapest awaits the winners.
