2026 World Cup European playoff draw

Sixteen European nations discover their fate as the road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup reaches its critical final stage

The draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup European playoffs took place today in Zurich, creating four knockout paths that will determine which nations join the 12 automatic qualifiers at next summer's tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. With single-leg semi-finals on March 26 and finals on March 31, 2026, the stage is set for high-stakes drama across the continent.

Path A: Italy's Redemption Quest Begins Against Northern Ireland

Four-time World Cup winners Italy have been drawn to face Northern Ireland in a semi-final that pits experience against determination. The Azzurri, still haunted by their failures to qualify for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, will host Northern Ireland knowing that anything less than victory would represent another catastrophic failure for Italian football.

Northern Ireland qualified for the playoffs through their impressive Nations League campaign despite finishing third in their World Cup qualifying group behind Germany and Slovakia. Michael O'Neill's side will relish their underdog status as they travel to face the Italian giants.

The other Path A semi-final sees Wales host Bosnia and Herzegovina in Cardiff. Craig Bellamy's Wales secured their seeded status with a stunning 7-1 demolition of North Macedonia in their final qualifier, with captain Harry Wilson scoring a hat-trick. Bosnia will be dangerous opponents, but Wales will be confident of reaching the final on home soil.

The winners of these two semi-finals will meet in the Path A final, with the victor securing their place at the World Cup.

Path B: Ukraine and Poland Eye World Cup Return

Path B features Ukraine taking on Sweden in what promises to be a compelling encounter between two nations desperate for World Cup qualification. Ukraine, playing under the emotional weight of their country's ongoing struggles, finished second in their group behind France. Sweden, who qualified through the Nations League route, missed out on the 2022 World Cup and will be determined to return to the global stage.

Poland, seeded in Pot 2, will host Albania in the other Path B semi-final. The Poles, led by their attacking talents, finished as runners-up behind the Netherlands in qualifying and will expect to overcome Albania, who secured their playoff spot by finishing second behind England in Group K.

Ukraine will host their semi-final, though likely at a neutral venue due to the ongoing situation in their country, while Poland enjoy home advantage in what should be a passionate atmosphere in Warsaw.

Path C: Turkey and Slovakia Battle for World Cup Dreams

Turkey's reward for pushing Spain all the way in Group E is a home semi-final against Romania, who qualified via the Nations League. The Turks drew 2-2 with Spain in their final qualifier and will be confident of overcoming Romania to reach the Path C final.

Slovakia, who topped a group containing Northern Ireland and Luxembourg before Germany pipped them to automatic qualification, will host Kosovo in the other Path C semi-final. This represents a golden opportunity for Slovakia to reach their second World Cup, having made their debut at the 2010 tournament in South Africa.

The Path C final will see the winner of Turkey vs Romania face either Slovakia or Kosovo, with all four nations knowing they are just two victories away from World Cup qualification.

Path D: Denmark Seek Redemption After Scotland Heartbreak

Denmark's shock defeat to Scotland in their final qualifier – a dramatic 4-2 loss after extra time that saw the Scots qualify automatically, means the Danes must navigate the playoff route. They will host North Macedonia, who qualified through the Nations League, in a semi-final they will be heavily favored to win despite the single-match format.

The Czech Republic face the Republic of Ireland in the other Path D semi-final, with Czechia hosting the match. Ireland's remarkable 3-2 comeback victory in Hungary, sealed by Troy Parrott's 96th-minute winner to complete his hat-trick, earned them a playoff spot and has given Heimir Hallgrímsson's side genuine belief they can go all the way.

Denmark will be desperate to avoid another playoff disaster, while Ireland will be dreaming of reaching their first World Cup since 2002.

High Stakes, Single Chances

The playoff format leaves no room for error. Unlike previous cycles, there are no second legs – each tie will be decided on the night, with extra time and penalties if necessary. The seeded teams from Pots 1 and 2 will host the semi-finals, giving them a crucial advantage, but the finals will see host teams determined by a separate draw.

For Italy, this represents their last chance to avoid a third consecutive World Cup absence – a scenario unthinkable for a nation with four World Cup titles. Denmark must overcome the psychological blow of their Scotland defeat. Wales are chasing a return after their memorable 2022 appearance, while Ireland are seeking to end a 24-year World Cup drought.

The 12 teams already qualified – England, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Norway, and Scotland – will be watching closely as these playoff battles unfold, knowing that four of these 16 nations will join them at the World Cup draw on December 5 in Washington D.C.
