Of the 104 matches played at this summer's World Cup, 13 will be played in Canada, across two of the country's most iconic cities, Toronto and Vancouver.

Toronto is Canada's largest city and one of its most diverse, with over half of its population being foreign-born, it's a place where cultures converge, making it a true melting pot. Known for its spectacular skyline and passionate sports fans, Toronto promises an unforgettable welcome for all international football fans. During the tournament, 6 matches will be held at the home of MLS side Toronto FC, BMO Field, which is expanding from 30,000 seats to 45,000 to meet standards and enhance the fan experience.

Vancouver, on the other hand, will offer fans a different vibe. Nestled between the ocean and the mountains, the city will provide one of the most picturesque backdrops during the tournament. Seven games will be played at BC Place, which boasts a retractable roof and hosted the Women's World Cup final between the USA and Japan in 2015.

By blending their world-class infrastructure and local warmth, Canada are set to deliver a uniquely Canadian World Cup experience, which fans from all over the globe will no doubt revel in.

Need to Knows About Canada

Currency

The official currency of Canada is the Canadian dollar (CAD). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in shops, restaurants and hotels across the country, along with contactless card payments. However, if you prefer to make payments with cash, you will find plenty of ATMs across the country, especially in the host cities.

Visa Details

If you are from the UK and planning on coming to Canada for the World Cup, you do not need a traditional Visa for short stays. However, you will need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). You can purchase an eTA from the official Canadian immigration website, which will cost you $7 CAD.

Interestingly, you only need an eTA if you arrive by air, as opposed to land or sea. For example, if you plan on driving into Canada from the USA, you do not need one. That being said, it's probably best to be safe rather than sorry, so purchasing an eTA is advisable in any case.

Language

English and French are the two dominant languages spoken across Canada. However, with a significant portion of the population, especially in cities like Toronto, being foreign-born, the country is remarkably linguistically diverse. That said, the vast majority of residents will speak either English or French as they are the most widely understood languages nationwide.

Time Zones

The two host cities are in different time zones, with Toronto in Eastern Time and Vancouver in Pacific Time. This means that during the World Cup in the summer, Vancouver will be three hours behind Toronto.

Weather

It's always worth double-checking the weather forecast closer to the time of your trip. For now, you can get a sense of what the weather usually looks like between mid-June and mid-July below:

City Avg. High (°C) Avg. Low (°C) Conditions & Notes
Toronto 25–27 15–17 Warm and humid, occasional rain, pack light layers and an umbrella
Vancouver 21–23 13–15 Mild and breezy, less humidity, great for outdoor fan zones

Electrical Outlets

  • Voltage: 120V
  • Frequency: 60Hz
  • Plug Types: Type A (two flat pins) and Type B (two flat pins + grounding pin)

If you're travelling from the UK, ensure that you have a compatible outlet adaptor, which you can normally buy at the airport before you travel.

Emergency Numbers

General Emergency: 911 - For police, fire, and medical emergencies nationwide.

Other numbers:

  • 988 - Mental health crisis and suicide prevention helpline (available 24/7).
  • 811 - Non-emergency health advice from registered nurses.
  • 211 - Community and social services (e.g. shelter, food, mental health support).

Football History in Canada

Canada aren't renowned for their footballing prowess, with ice hockey and lacrosse generally the country's national sports. However, in recent years, there has been a shift. Canada first qualified for the men's World Cup in 1986, but the tournament didn't exactly go to plan, with them losing all three games and exiting at the group stage. But, after a 36-year absence from the men's competition, Canada returned to the global stage in 2022, marking a new chapter in their footballing journey. Meanwhile, the women's team has emerged as a genuine force, winning Olympic gold in 2021 and consistently challenging at the highest level.

Fueling this rise is the growth of domestic football in the country, particularly through Major League Soccer. Canada is home to three MLS clubs, Toronto FC, Vancouver Whitecaps, and CF Montréal, who have welcomed ex-Premier League stars like Didier Drogba and Jermaine Defoe to the country, helping elevate fan engagement and raise the sport's profile nationwide.

Now, as co-hosts of the tournament in the summer, there is newfound hope among Canadian supporters that they can truly compete on the biggest stage. With world-class stars Alphonso Davies of Bayern Munich and Jonathan David of Juventus leading the charge, Canada could be a genuine surprise package at this World Cup.
