The 2026-2027 Premier League season opened with one result that surprised nobody and two that changed the mood around clubs with very different ambitions. Arsenal picked up where they left off, while Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur both left their opening fixture with nothing.
Arsenal 3-0 Coventry City: a flawless start to the title defence
Arsenal began the defence of their crown with a controlled win over newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium on Friday 21 August 2026.
Riccardo Calafiori was allowed to advance down the left and delivered into the box, where Kai Havertz met the cross and finished emphatically. Roughly eight minutes later Bukayo Saka, again Arsenal's most direct threat, made it 2-0 and removed any hope Coventry had of building a foothold.
Any thoughts of a revival after the interval disappeared almost immediately. Martin Ødegaard added a third shortly after the restart, benefiting from a slice of fortune but capping a period in which Arsenal were entirely dominant. With the points secured, Mikel Arteta's side eased off, which kept the scoreline respectable for a Coventry team back in the top flight for the first time since their relegation in 2001.
The result extends a perfect opening to the campaign for Arsenal, who lifted the Community Shield the previous weekend with a 3-0 win over Manchester City. Two matches, six goals scored, none conceded.
Hull City 2-0 Manchester United: the Tigers stun the favourites
Hull City could hardly have asked for a better way to mark their first Premier League match in nine years. The Tigers beat Manchester United 2-0 at the MKM Stadium on Saturday 22 August 2026.
United arrived as heavy favourites. Michael Carrick's side finished third last season, taking sixteen points from their final six matches to secure Champions League football with something to spare, and had strengthened their midfield over the summer. Hull, by contrast, had been widely tipped for an immediate return to the Championship.
In the seventeenth minute Semi Ajayi reacted quickest inside a crowded box after goalkeeper Senne Lammens could only push out an effort from Oliver McBurnie. Seven minutes before the interval Regan Slater swung in a free kick and Nobel Mendy rose to head it home for 2-0.
Carrick acted at the break, introducing Marcus Rashford for his first competitive appearance since December 2024 following loan spells at Aston Villa and Barcelona, with Benjamin Sesko also brought on. Neither change made the difference. Hull held firm for a clean sheet and a result that had eluded them against United in league football since 1974.
Brentford 3-0 Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs blown away at the Gtech
Brentford produced the most emphatic performance of the weekend, sweeping Tottenham Hotspur aside at the Gtech Community Stadium. It was Spurs' joint-heaviest opening-day defeat in Premier League history.
The first goal was the pick of the three. A fifteen-pass move involving club-record signing Mamadou Sangaré and Dango Ouattara ended with Keane Lewis-Potter driving the ball past Antonín Kinsky. In the thirty-third minute Mathias Jensen struck from outside the area, Kinsky got a hand to it but could not hold on, and Vitaly Janelt followed in to convert the rebound.
Tottenham failed to register a single attempt on goal in the entire first half. The third arrived in the forty-ninth minute when Sangaré struck a fierce volley that Kinsky again spilled, allowing Michael Kayode to turn it in from close range.
Brentford almost made it four when substitute Rodrigo Bentancur brought down Kevin Schade from behind, but Igor Thiago struck the resulting penalty against the post. Seven different Brentford players had a shot on target across the ninety minutes, while just two Spurs players tested Caoimhín Kelleher. Roberto De Zerbi acknowledged afterwards that his team had not been ready for the fight.
What the opening weekend told us
Arsenal look the most complete side in the division and have a settled spine to build on. Manchester United's summer optimism has been punctured within ninety minutes, with Carrick admitting his squad has a great deal to learn. Tottenham's rebuild under De Zerbi will need time that the fixture list is not offering. For the promoted clubs the picture is mixed: Hull have an early statement result, while Coventry now turn their attention to the matches that will actually decide their survival.
