Stadium information

Name:

Volksparkstadion

Capacity:

57,000

Address:

Sylvesterallee 7, 22525 Hamburg, Germany

Description:

The Volksparkstadion is one of the most iconic football grounds in Germany, and one of the largest. The club have used this location for football since 1953, when the first Volksparkstadion opened in the Altonaer Volkspark in the west of Hamburg. In 1998 the entire ground was rebuilt from scratch. The pitch was rotated 90 degrees to allow better sunlight, the athletics track was removed and all four stands were brought very close to the pitch. The new Volksparkstadion reopened with a capacity of 57.000 for club matches and 51.500 for international matches, where the large standing section in the Nordtribüne is converted to seating. Over the years the stadium has been known under different names. AOL Arena from 2001 to 2007, then HSH Nordbank Arena, then Imtech Arena, before returning to the name Volksparkstadion in 2018. The name has changed many times. The stadium has not. It remains one of the loudest and most impressive matchday environments in German football. In the 2025-26 season, every single home match was played in front of a sold-out crowd of 57.000. Nothing very special happened in between the matches. Just sold out. Every time. You will feel the character of this place from the very first moment you take seat in one of the four stands.

Best way to travel to the Volksparkstadion

When you’ve booked your Hamburger SV tickets it’s time to find out how you can get to the stadium. The Volksparkstadion is located in the Altonaer Volkspark district, around 9 kilometres west of Hamburg city centre. These are the options you have to get to the ground.

By S-Bahn

The S-Bahn is by far the fastest and most reliable way to reach the Volksparkstadion on matchdays. S-Bahn line S3 stops at Stellingen station, which is a 15-minute walk from the stadium. On matchdays extra shuttle services run directly between Altona station and the stadium area. Also from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof you can reach the stadium area in around 25 minutes by S-Bahn without any changes. Not only is the S-Bahn fast, also it avoids all the matchday traffic on the roads around the stadium in the final hour before kick-off. The return journey after the match is also well organised, with extra services running until all supporters have left. When you arrive in Hamburg by long-distance train and want to get to the stadium, the S-Bahn from Hauptbahnhof or Altona is always the recommended option.

By Train

Hamburg Hauptbahnhof is one of the best-connected train stations in Germany, with direct high-speed services from Berlin, Bremen, Hannover, Frankfurt and many other cities. Also from Copenhagen, Amsterdam and other international destinations you can reach Hamburg by train. From Hauptbahnhof you take the S-Bahn as described above. On derby days against FC St. Pauli the connections from across the whole Hamburg metropolitan area are very busy from the early afternoon. Not only do HSV supporters travel from across northern Germany to these fixtures, also visiting fans come in large numbers by train on the biggest matchdays. Booking your train ticket in advance on the most important fixtures of the season is worth doing.

By Car

The Volksparkstadion is close to the A7 motorway, with the Hamburg-Volkspark exit bringing you within 1 kilometre of the ground. Several car parks are available in the Altonaer Volkspark area around the stadium. On matchdays you need to count on very significant traffic in the stadium district in the final 45 minutes before kick-off. Also the roads after the final whistle can be very busy when all 57.000 supporters leave a sold-out Volksparkstadion at the same time. Not only is parking limited close to the ground, also the return journey can take considerable time on the most popular matchdays. The S-Bahn from the city centre is a much more relaxed option on most occasions.

By Bicycle

Hamburg has an excellent cycling infrastructure and the Volksparkstadion is reachable by bicycle from the city centre in around 40 minutes via the dedicated cycle paths that run through the Altonaer Volkspark. Bicycle parking you will find in good quantities around the stadium on matchdays. Not only do you avoid all the matchday traffic by cycling, also the approach through the large park surrounding the stadium makes the journey very pleasant even in the cooler autumn and winter months of the Bundesliga season. Also from the Bahrenfeld and Stellingen districts very close to the ground, the cycling distance is very short.

Volksparkstadion guide

The Volksparkstadion has four stands. Since the 1998 rebuild removed the athletics track, all four stands sit very close to the pitch and the stadium has an enclosed, very intense atmosphere on matchdays. The 57.000 places are divided between the Nordtribüne, the Osttribüne, the Südtribüne and the Westtribüne.

Nordtribüne (North Stand)

The Nordtribüne is the most famous part of the Volksparkstadion. This is where the most passionate Hamburger SV supporters take seat and stand, and where the atmosphere is at its most intense from the very first minute to the very last. The large standing section in the Nordtribüne is where the HSV ultras are based and where the singing starts and almost never stops. When HSV score in front of the Nordtribüne you will feel the noise physically throughout the whole stadium. Not only is the Nordtribüne the loudest part of the ground, also the visual choreographies that the active supporter groups create on the biggest matchdays make it one of the most impressive end stands in the whole Bundesliga. When Hamburg scored the fourth goal to make it 4-0 against Mainz on 5 October 2025, with 57.000 supporters inside and the Nordtribüne in full voice, it was one of the loudest moments of the entire Bundesliga season. Not only are the tickets here among the cheapest in the stadium, also the experience of standing in the Nordtribüne for a big Hamburger SV match is something you will remember for a very long time.

Osttribüne (East Stand)

The Osttribüne is the stand where you will find the VIP facilities, the press area and the best-positioned central seating in the Volksparkstadion. From the Osttribüne you will have an excellent view of the full length of the pitch and of all four stands around you. Also the covered upper tier of the Osttribüne gives very good protection from the Hamburg weather, which can change quickly in the autumn and winter months. From the central seats in the Osttribüne you will have a full view of the Nordtribüne directly across the pitch, which is the best position in the stadium to watch the atmosphere building before kick-off. Also the sightlines down both touchlines from the central Osttribüne are among the best in the whole ground. For supporters who want the most comfortable experience with the best view of the game, the Osttribüne is the clear choice.

Südtribüne (South Stand)

On the opposite site of the Nordtribüne, you will find the Südtribüne. Away supporters have a corner block here, between the Südtribüne and the Westtribüne. The home sections cover most of the stand. Nothing very special separates the Südtribüne from the Nordtribüne in terms of pitch view. Both are behind a goal. Both are close to the action. From the home sections you will get a good look at the full length of the pitch. Also the Nordtribüne is directly opposite, which means when the ultras section reacts to a goal, you see it immediately. Also the corner area closest to the away block can be a bit noisy in a different way on derby matchdays. Good option for supporters who want goal-end football without the most intense standing section.

Westtribüne (West Stand)

The Westtribüne is the western sideline stand. It faces the Osttribüne across the pitch. Not only does it give a very good view along the full length of the field, also the prices here are normally lower than the central Osttribüne sections. You will find different seat categories. Some closer to the corner areas, some central. From the Westtribüne you will have a full view of both curve stands. Also the pitch is very close since the athletics track was removed in the 1998 rebuild. Nothing very special about the exterior of the stand. Inside it is different. You feel the noise from all four sides. On St. Pauli derby days the Westtribüne is loud and electric from early in the day, well before kick-off.

Which stand should you choose?

Not every stand gives you the same experience at the Volksparkstadion. We made this table so you can compare all four stands in one quick look. Check what matters to you and you will find the right stand.

Priority Best Stand Why
Best atmosphere Nordtribüne Standing HSV ultras section, one of the loudest atmospheres in the Bundesliga
Best view Osttribüne Central VIP stand, best sightlines along the full pitch, covered
First-time visitor Osttribüne or Westtribüne Central sideline position, full stadium visible, great atmosphere
Families with children Osttribüne or Westtribüne Lower Seated, covered, good facilities, away from the most intense sections
Budget-conscious Nordtribüne or Südtribüne Most affordable tickets, still full atmosphere in a sold-out stadium
Singing & standing Nordtribüne Standing Expect to stand and sing for the full 90 minutes
See the players close Osttribüne or Westtribüne Lower Central Closest to dugouts and the touchline
Premium comfort Osttribüne VIP Hospitality lounges, premium seating, catering included

Hamburger SV Club Information

Current Manager:

Merlin Polzin

Current Captain:

Yussuf Poulsen

League Position Last Season:

13th place, Bundesliga 2025-26

Club history

Hamburger SV were founded on 29 September 1887. The original club was called Hamburger FC. In 1919 it merged with SC Germania Hamburg and FC Falke Hamburg. The result was the Hamburger Sport-Verein. The club moved to the Altonaer Volkspark site in 1953. First came Uwe Seeler. He joined in 1954. He played until 1972. He scored 491 goals for the club. Nothing very special in German football at that time compared to what Seeler meant for Hamburg. Inter Milan made an offer in 1961. Seeler said no. He stayed. His bronze statue stands outside the Volksparkstadion today. Then came 1977. Kevin Keegan arrived from Liverpool. He won the European Footballer of the Year award twice while at HSV. Not only was Keegan a very big name, also the team around him was very strong. Then came 1983. Athens. The European Cup final. Hamburg beat Juventus 1-0. Felix Magath scored. Not only did they win the most important club trophy in European football that year, also they won the Bundesliga title in the same season. The 1982-83 team under manager Ernst Happel is still spoken about today. After that the club had its normal cycles. But one thing stayed the same. From the very first Bundesliga season in 1963-64, Hamburger SV had never been relegated. Not once. Every other club went up and went down. Hamburg were always there. They called themselves Der Dino. The dinosaur. The one that should have been extinct but never was. A clock inside the Volksparkstadion counted every single day in the top flight. Then, on 12 May 2018, it stopped. Relegated. For the very first time in 55 consecutive Bundesliga seasons. Seven years in the 2. Bundesliga followed. Near promotions. Painful play-off defeats. Nothing worked. Then in the 2024-25 season it finally happened. Promotion back. On 5 October 2025, matchday 6, Hamburg beat 1. FSV Mainz 05 4-0 at the Volksparkstadion. 57.000 supporters. Every home match that season sold out. Merlin Polzin managed the team. Yussuf Poulsen wore the captain’s armband. The season ended 13th. Der Dino was back.

German influences

Hamburg and Hamburger SV are very much the same thing. The city comes first. Hamburg is Germany’s second-largest city. Also it is the country’s most important port. For centuries Hamburg has traded with the whole world. In the Middle Ages the city was a founding member of the Hanseatic League. That trading tradition never went away. Not only is the port one of the biggest in Europe, also the city has a reputation for being very open and very direct. Also the music history is important. The Beatles played the Reeperbahn clubs in the early 1960s, before they were famous anywhere. Hamburg gave them their first real crowd. Nothing very special happened at those concerts at the time. The world found out later. Also the Elbphilharmonie opened in 2017 on the banks of the Elbe. It became one of the most photographed buildings in Germany within a very short time. The club is called die Rothosen. Red Shorts. The kit is blue and white with red details. It has looked roughly the same for a very long time. Yussuf Poulsen came from RB Leipzig in summer 2025 to wear the captain’s armband. He brought calmness and experience to a squad that had just returned to the Bundesliga. When the Volksparkstadion is sold out for a big match, you will feel quite fast why this club and this city belong together.

Hamburger SV Honours & Trophies

Hamburger SV have six German football championship titles. The biggest trophy came in 1983. European Cup. Athens. Juventus 1-0. Felix Magath. Not only did that 1983 team win the European Cup, also they won the Bundesliga in the same season. Double. Also in 1976 they won both the DFB-Pokal and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in the same year. HSV also hold the record of 55 consecutive Bundesliga seasons without relegation, from 1963-64 to 2017-18. No other German club has come close to that number. Cheap and premium Hamburger SV football tickets for the Bundesliga are available to buy now at LiveFootballTickets.com.

Rivalries

Main Rivals

Hamburger Stadtderby against FC St. Pauli

The Hamburg city derby against FC St. Pauli is the match that matters most for HSV supporters. Both clubs are in the same city. They share the same streets. But they have nothing else in common. HSV are one of the most traditional clubs in German football history. St. Pauli have a very different identity. Alternative. Political. Strong local roots in the Millerntor neighbourhood. Ask any HSV fan which match they look forward to most. The answer is always St. Pauli. Always. Not only is the sporting rivalry very intense, also the two clubs represent two completely different ways of being a football supporter in Hamburg. When the two clubs meet at the Volksparkstadion, you will feel something different from the very first minute. Also on matchdays when HSV travel to the Millerntor-Stadion, a very large number of HSV supporters make the short journey for one of the most charged matchday experiences in the whole Bundesliga.

Minor Rivalries

Nordderby against Werder Bremen

The Nordderby against Werder Bremen is also very important. Both clubs come from the north. Bremen is 120 kilometres from Hamburg. Both cities. Both proud. When they are in the same division the fixture carries a lot. Not only do the two clubs have a long football rivalry, also the match always feels like more than just three points for both sets of supporters. Also the history between the clubs goes back before the Bundesliga era. Very long. When HSV and Werder meet at the Volksparkstadion, you will feel the whole stadium go a level louder from the first minute. Nothing very special about the buildup. Then the whistle goes and everything changes.

Frequently Asked Questions about Hamburger SV tickets

Frequently Asked Questions about Hamburger SV tickets

Hamburger SV away tickets are a bit harder to find than tickets for home matches. This is due to the fact that there is much more space for home fans in every Bundesliga stadium, than there is for HSV fans in those grounds. We managed to get our hands on HSV football tickets for almost every Bundesliga match. Select the away match you want to attend and then look at the ticket inventory. All our away match tickets are labelled. The most used labels for HSV’s away matches are: HSV section, Away section, Hamburg fans section and away end. When the section label isn’t similar to these labels, the tickets are for the home team.
