Stadium information
Name:
MEWA Arena
Capacity:
33,305
Address:
Eugen-Salomon-Straße, 55129 Mainz, Germany
Description:
The MEWA Arena opened in the summer of 2011 and replaced the old Bruchwegstadion, which had been the home of Mainz 05 since 1928. The stadium holds 33.305 spectators. Not only is the design of the MEWA Arena very modern, also the four steep one-tier stands make it one of the loudest compact stadiums in the Bundesliga. The stands rise up sharply from the pitch and bring all supporters very close to the action. There are no large distances between the fans and the players. Also from a visual point of view the MEWA Arena is impressive, with open corners that give views of the city and the surrounding countryside of Rhineland-Palatinate. When the stadium is full, you will feel the atmosphere from all four stands at the same time. Also the approach to the stadium through the Mainz district of Bretzenheim is very straightforward on matchdays.
Best way to travel to the MEWA Arena
When you’ve booked your Mainz 05 tickets it’s time to find out how you can get to the stadium. The MEWA Arena is located in the Bretzenheim district on the south-western edge of Mainz. These are the options you have to get to the ground.
By Tram and Bus
Public transport is the best option for matchdays. Mainz has a well-connected tram network and several lines bring you close to the stadium. Also extra services are added on matchdays, both before kick-off and after the final whistle. The tram stop for the MEWA Arena is around a ten-minute walk from the ground. From Mainz Hauptbahnhof the journey by tram takes around 15 to 20 minutes. Not only is this the most comfortable way to travel, also it avoids all the matchday traffic in the roads around the stadium. Also from the city centre, getting to the MEWA Arena by tram is very easy and the journey is one of the pleasant parts of the whole matchday experience.
By Train
Mainz Hauptbahnhof is very well connected by rail. From Frankfurt the journey is around 35 minutes by regional express. From Mannheim it takes around 45 minutes. Also from Cologne, Stuttgart and other major German cities, Mainz is reachable by direct train in a reasonable time. Not only is Frankfurt the most popular connection for visiting fans, also Wiesbaden across the Rhine is reachable very quickly and has good train links to the rest of Germany. From Hauptbahnhof you then take the tram or bus to the stadium. On derby matchdays against Eintracht Frankfurt the train connections from Frankfurt are very busy in both directions.
By Car
The MEWA Arena is accessible from the A60, A63 and A643 motorways. Parking is available in the area around the stadium. On matchdays you need to count on some traffic near the ground in the last hour before kick-off and also in the 30 minutes after the final whistle. When you are coming from Frankfurt by car, the combination of train to Mainz and then tram is often a faster and more relaxed option than driving. Not only does the train save time, also it means you can focus on the match and enjoy the day without worrying about the parking situation.
By Bicycle
Mainz is a city with good cycling infrastructure and the MEWA Arena is reachable by bicycle from the city centre in around 20 minutes. Also from the surrounding residential districts of Bretzenheim and Gonsenheim the cycling distance to the ground is very manageable. Bicycle parking you will find around the stadium on matchdays. Not only do you avoid all the traffic on a matchday, also the return journey by bicycle after the match through the quieter streets of south-western Mainz is a very relaxed way to end an evening at the MEWA Arena.
MEWA Arena guide
The MEWA Arena has four stands. The steep and compact design means supporters are very close to the pitch from every position. The 33.305 places are divided between the Haupttribüne, the ORGENTEC-Tribüne, the Lotto Rheinland-Pfalz-Tribüne and the ENTEGA-Tribüne.
Haupttribüne (Main Stand)
The Haupttribüne is the main stand of the MEWA Arena, running along the west side of the pitch. This is where you will find the VIP boxes, the press area and the most comfortable seating in the whole stadium. From the Haupttribüne you will have a very good overview along the full length of the pitch. The roof gives protection from the weather and the view across the ground to the ORGENTEC-Tribüne and both end stands is very impressive when the stadium is full. It is a bit more about comfort here compared to the end stands, but on a big matchday you will still feel the full noise and energy from the Lotto Rheinland-Pfalz-Tribüne coming at you from across the pitch.
ORGENTEC-Tribüne (Gegengerade)
On the opposite site of the Haupttribüne, you will find the ORGENTEC-Tribüne. Also this stand gives a very good view along the full length of the pitch. There is something very unique about this stand. It has a Supportbereich Gegengerade, a standing section running the full length of the sideline. This is one of the only stadiums in Germany where you will find standing supporters on a long side rather than only in the end stands. Also this standing section creates a very special atmosphere during big matches, with the active supporters spread along the entire touchline on this side of the ground. From the ORGENTEC-Tribüne you will feel the full intensity of a Mainz 05 home match in a way that is quite different to the end stands.
Lotto Rheinland-Pfalz-Tribüne (Nordkurve)
The Lotto Rheinland-Pfalz-Tribüne is where you will find the most passionate Mainz 05 supporters. Nearly 14.000 supporters take seat in this large standing section on the north end of the ground. The ultras and the most active home fans are here. The singing starts from the first minute. When Mainz 05 score a goal, you will hear something you will not find in any other Bundesliga stadium. The Narrhallamarsch, a famous German carnival tune, is played after every Mainz goal at home. It is a unique tradition that goes back many years and is one of the most special moments of a Mainz 05 matchday. Not only does the goal celebration feel very different here, also the singing and the noise from the Lotto Rheinland-Pfalz-Tribüne set the tone for the whole stadium from the opening whistle. Also the visual choreographies on the biggest home matches come from this section.
ENTEGA-Tribüne (Südkurve)
On the opposite site of the Lotto Rheinland-Pfalz-Tribüne, you will find the ENTEGA-Tribüne. Also this stand has strong home support in the main sections, with the away fans placed in a clearly separated block of around 3.500 places at one side of the stand. The entry for away fans is through the dedicated blocks on this side of the stadium. From the ENTEGA-Tribüne you will get a very good view across the full pitch and of both the Haupttribüne and the ORGENTEC-Tribüne. Also on the biggest Bundesliga matchdays you will feel the atmosphere from the Lotto Rheinland-Pfalz-Tribüne very clearly from this position.
Which stand should you choose?
Not every stand gives you the same experience at the MEWA Arena. We made this table so you can compare all four stands in one quick look. Check what matters to you and you will find the right stand.

Club history
1. FSV Mainz 05 was founded on 16 March 1905 in the city of Mainz on the Rhine. The name of the club comes from the year 1905. Die Nullfünfer, which is the nickname, means “the 05ers”. For many decades after their founding, the club played in the regional and second divisions of German football. The Bundesliga was founded in 1963. Mainz were not part of it. Nothing very special happened for a long time. Then came Jürgen Klopp. He arrived as head coach in February 2001 and changed everything. In 2004 Mainz won promotion to the Bundesliga for the very first time. The city of Mainz had never seen a Bundesliga club before. Not only did they stay up in their first season, also they qualified for the UEFA Cup in 2005 as Germany’s UEFA Fair Play selection. Their European debut was in September 2005. They beat Armenian club Mika and Icelandic club Keflavík in the qualifying rounds. Then they faced Sevilla. Sevilla won 2-0 on aggregate. A loss, but still a very proud moment for a club like Mainz. Klopp left for Borussia Dortmund in 2008. Thomas Tuchel took over and the club continued to develop. The 2010-11 season was historic. Mainz won their first seven Bundesliga matches, tying a Bundesliga record. They finished fifth and reached the Europa League. A club from a city of 220.000 people, competing in Europe. Not many people had expected that. Bo Svensson became head coach in January 2021 and brought another revival. In the 2024-25 season Mainz came very close to qualifying for the Champions League. They were in third place in March 2025. Then results dropped and they finished sixth, qualifying for the Conference League. In the Conference League they went all the way to the quarter-finals. On 14 December 2025, just one week after Urs Fischer had been appointed as the new head coach, Mainz drew 2-2 away at Bayern München. That result told the whole Bundesliga that something had changed. Fischer guided the club from the bottom of the table to a 10th place finish. Not only was that a very large improvement, also it confirmed once more what Mainz 05 have always been: a club that finds a way.
German influences
1. FSV Mainz 05 has a very strong connection to the character of the city of Mainz. Mainz is one of the three most famous carnival cities in Germany, alongside Düsseldorf and Cologne. The carnival culture runs very deep here. It has done for centuries. The club reflects this. After every Mainz 05 goal at home, the Narrhallamarsch is played in the MEWA Arena. The Narrhallamarsch is a famous German carnival tune that has been associated with the club for many years. Also the city of Mainz has a very long history. It was here that Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press around 1450, one of the most important moments in human history. The Gutenberg Museum is one of the main attractions of the city. Not only is the club deeply connected to the city’s carnival identity, also the people of Mainz have a very strong bond with their Bundesliga club. Captain Silvan Widmer, the Swiss defender who has been at the club for many years and wears the armband with great commitment, represents the loyalty and the fighting spirit that Mainz supporters always expect from their team. When you come to the MEWA Arena for a match, you will feel quite fast that the relationship between the city and its club is something very personal and very direct.
1. FSV Mainz 05 Honours & Trophies
Mainz 05 have no Bundesliga titles or DFB-Pokal wins. But seventeen consecutive seasons in the Bundesliga, a UEFA Conference League quarter-final in 2025-26, and a club history that includes Jürgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel as managers make this a club with a story that many bigger and richer clubs cannot match. Not many German clubs from outside the traditional football cities have shown the same ability to survive at the top level for this long. Rivalries
Main Rivals
Rhine-Main Derby against Eintracht Frankfurt
The biggest match in the Mainz 05 calendar is the Rhine-Main Derby against Eintracht Frankfurt. The two clubs are less than 40 kilometres apart and both sit in the Rhine-Main region. For Mainz supporters this is the most important fixture of the season. When Mainz and Frankfurt meet, you will find a very intense atmosphere in the MEWA Arena from the very first minute. Not only do supporters from both sides follow this match very closely, also the media attention in the whole Rhine-Main region is much larger than for a normal Bundesliga match. When you come to the MEWA Arena for a Derby against Frankfurt, you will feel a very different kind of energy compared to a regular home game. Also the return fixture in Frankfurt is one of the most followed matches by Mainz supporters every season.
Minor Rivalries
Südwestderby against 1. FC Kaiserslautern
The rivalry with 1. FC Kaiserslautern is another important one for Mainz supporters. Both clubs come from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, which makes this a very clear regional derby. When the two clubs meet in the same division, the match carries a strong local pride for supporters on both sides. Kaiserslautern have a long and proud history in German football and the name of the Betzenberg, their famous ground, is known all over Germany. Not only is there a sporting competition when the two clubs meet, also the shared Rhineland-Palatinate identity of the two clubs gives these fixtures a special importance that goes beyond the league table.
