Stadium information
Name:
Stadion An der Alten Försterei
Capacity:
22,012
Address:
An der Alten Försterei 1, 12555 Berlin, Germany
Description:
The Stadion An der Alten Försterei is one of the most special football grounds in all of Germany. The name translates as “Stadium at the Old Forester’s House” and it sits in the green, forested Köpenick area of south-east Berlin. The ground holds 22.012 spectators and a very large part of the stadium is standing, which makes the atmosphere here very different to the modern Bundesliga arenas. Not only is the ground compact and close to the pitch, also the story behind it is unlike anything else in German football. In 2008 and 2009, more than 2.000 Union Berlin supporters gave their own time and labour to help expand the stadium. In total, they volunteered more than 140.000 hours of work. That is a story that says everything you need to know about this club and its people. On matchdays the atmosphere you will feel in the Stadion An der Alten Försterei is raw, close, and something that every football fan should experience at least once.
Best way to travel to Stadion An der Alten Försterei
When you’ve booked your Union Berlin tickets it’s time to find out how you can get to the stadium. The Stadion An der Alten Försterei is located in the Köpenick district of south-east Berlin. It is well connected by public transport and most supporters travel by S-Bahn or tram. These are the options you have to get to the ground.
By S-Bahn
The easiest way to reach the Stadion An der Alten Försterei from central Berlin is by S-Bahn. Take line S3 in the direction of Erkner and get off at the stop Wuhlheide. From Wuhlheide it is a walk of around 10 minutes through the forest to the stadium. On matchdays you will find a lot of other Union Berlin supporters walking the same route through the trees, and this walk is already part of the matchday experience. Also from Berlin Hauptbahnhof the journey on the S3 is direct and takes around 30 to 35 minutes to Wuhlheide.
By Tram
The tram is also a very direct option to reach the stadium. Line 27 and line 67 both stop at Haltestelle Alte Försterei, which is directly in front of the ground. From Köpenick S-Bahn station you can take the tram and be at the stadium in around 10 minutes. On matchdays the trams are running with extra frequency and you will find them busy with supporters. Also from other parts of Köpenick the tram connections are very easy and comfortable for matchday travel.
By Car
Coming by car to the Stadion An der Alten Försterei is possible but it is not the most comfortable option. The area around the stadium is mostly residential and the parking options are limited. Also on matchdays traffic in the Köpenick area is heavy around kick-off time and in the hour after the final whistle. When you still want to come by car, the combination of parking in a further away part of Köpenick and then taking the tram is often more relaxed in the end. Also cycling or taking public transport from one of the bigger S-Bahn stations is a much more enjoyable way to arrive at the ground.
By Bicycle
The Stadion An der Alten Försterei is very well suited for cycling. The forest paths and cycle routes around Köpenick make the approach by bicycle a very pleasant one. From central Köpenick it is around 15 minutes by bicycle to the ground. On matchdays bicycle parking you will find in large numbers around the stadium and the area is well set up for cyclists. Not only do you avoid all the traffic and the crowded trams, also the ride through the forest to the stadium on a matchday is something that many Union supporters do every single home game.
Stadion An der Alten Försterei guide
The Stadion An der Alten Försterei has four stands. The compact design brings you very close to the pitch from almost every position. The 22.012 places are divided between the Haupttribüne, the Gegengerade, the Waldseite and the Gegenkurve.
Haupttribüne (Main Stand)
The Haupttribüne is the main covered stand of the Stadion An der Alten Försterei, running along the west side of the pitch. This is where you will find the press area, the VIP sections, and the most comfortable seating in the stadium. The roof above the Haupttribüne gives some protection from the elements, which is something you appreciate on cold Berlin winter matchdays. From the Haupttribüne you will have a very good view along the full length of the pitch. It is a bit more about comfort here compared to the standing sections, but on a big matchday you will still feel the noise from the rest of the stadium coming at you from all three other sides.
Gegengerade (East Stand)
On the opposite site of the Haupttribüne, you will find the Gegengerade. Also this stand gives a very good view along the full length of the pitch. It is more affordable than the main stand. That makes it a popular choice for supporters who want a good view at a fair price. From the Gegengerade you will have a full overview of the Haupttribüne in front of you and both end stands to your left and right. Also for first-time visitors this is a very good option. You see the whole stadium from here and that gives you a very good feeling for what the Stadion An der Alten Försterei is all about.
Waldseite (Forest Stand)
The Waldseite, which means “forest side”, is one of the end stands. It faces towards the forest and the trees that surround the ground on that side. A standing section. The atmosphere here is very intense on matchdays. The compact design means the noise from the Waldseite carries very directly to the other parts of the stadium. When Union Berlin score, you will feel the reaction in the Waldseite very fast and very physical. Also the view from here is very good, with both long sides of the stadium clearly visible from the standing terrace.
Gegenkurve (Home End)
The Gegenkurve is the home end of the Stadion An der Alten Försterei. The most passionate section in the whole ground. The ultras and the most active home supporters take seat in the standing part here. The singing starts from the first minute. It barely stops before the final whistle. Also this stand is where the famous atmosphere of Union Berlin originates from. Not only is the noise here louder than in any other part of the ground, also the visual displays and choreographies from the Gegenkurve are some of the best you will find anywhere in the Bundesliga. If you want to know what it really means to be an Eiserner, take seat in the Gegenkurve.
Which stand should you choose?
Not every stand gives you the same experience at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei. We made this table so you can compare all four stands in one quick look. Check what matters to you and you will find the right stand in the table.
| Priority | Best Stand | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Best atmosphere | Gegenkurve Standing | Ultras section, loudest part of the stadium |
| Best view | Haupttribüne Central | Full pitch sightlines, covered, comfortable seating |
| First-time visitor | Gegengerade | Good overview, affordable, full stadium visible |
| Families with children | Haupttribüne Lower | Quieter, good facilities, comfortable seating |
| Budget-conscious | Gegengerade or Waldseite | Good value, strong atmosphere, decent view |
| Singing & standing | Gegenkurve Standing | Expect to stand and sing for the full 90 minutes |
| See the players close | Haupttribüne Lower Central | Closest to dugouts and the touchline |
| Premium comfort | Haupttribüne VIP | Hospitality lounges, padded seating, catering included |

Club history
1. FC Union Berlin was founded on 20 January 1906 in the Oberschöneweide district of Berlin. Today this area is part of what people call Köpenick. For the first decades the club played in the Berlin and Brandenburg regional divisions. Nothing very special happened. Then came the second World War. After that came the division of Germany in 1945. Union Berlin found themselves in East Berlin. The communist part of the city. This was hard for any independent club. The regime tried to control football. One club received all the state support. That was BFC Dynamo, the team of the secret police. Union Berlin got none of this. They were always the underdog. The people of Köpenick loved them exactly for that. Not only did the club survive the GDR era without losing its independent identity, also the supporter culture built in those years is still very much alive today. German reunification came in 1990. Union Berlin started again in the lower German football pyramid. Almost three decades in the second and third divisions followed. Then in May 2019, Union Berlin won promotion to the Bundesliga. For the very first time in their history. The whole neighbourhood celebrated. From there they kept going. Not only did they survive in the Bundesliga, also they qualified for European football. In the 2023-24 season they played in the UEFA Champions League. Also the 2025-26 Bundesliga campaign was solid. They finished 11th. Mauro Lustrinelli was then appointed as the new head coach in May 2026.
German influences
1. FC Union Berlin has a very strong German identity. The club is rooted in Köpenick and in the south-east of Berlin. This goes back more than 120 years. Not only is the club deeply connected to its neighbourhood, also the traditions the supporters have built over the decades are something very unique in German football. The most famous of these traditions is the Weihnachtssingen. Every December, tens of thousands of Union supporters gather inside the Stadion An der Alten Försterei with candles and lanterns. They sing Christmas carols together. It started as a small tradition many years ago. Today it is one of the most special events in German football. Also captain Christopher Trimmel, who joined the club in 2014 and has been captain for many years, represents this bond between the club and its people very well. His loyalty is something you will not find at many other Bundesliga clubs. When you come to a match at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei, you will feel quite fast that this club is not like the others. It is more personal here.

Rivalries
Main Rivals
Berlin Derby against Hertha BSC
For Union Berlin supporters, the Berlin Derby against Hertha BSC is the most important match of the whole season. The two clubs represent two very different parts of Berlin. Union Berlin come from the working-class east of the city, rooted in Köpenick. Hertha BSC are historically the club of west Berlin. For many years the two clubs were in different divisions and the derby did not happen. When Union Berlin were promoted to the Bundesliga in 2019, that all changed. Not only did the city derby become a regular Bundesliga fixture, also the tension and the history between the two sets of supporters gave these matches a very special atmosphere. Also the cultural difference between the two clubs adds a clear edge to this derby. When Union and Hertha meet, you will feel the intensity from every corner of the Stadion An der Alten Försterei.
Minor Rivalries
Rivalry with BFC Dynamo
The rivalry with BFC Dynamo is a deeply historical one. During the GDR era, BFC Dynamo were the club of the East German secret police, the Stasi. They received all the support and resources of the state and dominated East German football during the 1970s and 1980s. Union Berlin were the opposite. They were the club the regime never really trusted. This ideological difference created a very fierce rivalry that Union supporters still carry with them today. BFC Dynamo now play in the lower German divisions but when the two clubs meet in cup competition or regional matches, the history is very much present.
Rivalry with 1. FC Köln
Also the rivalry with 1. FC Köln has a certain edge to it in the Bundesliga. Both clubs have had periods in and around the same area of the Bundesliga table and the matches between them are always competitive. You will find that the supporters of both clubs take these fixtures seriously, even if the rivalry is not as emotionally charged as the Berlin derby.
