The 2026-2027 Europa League format
The Europa League is the second tier of European club football, below the Champions League, and it has used a league phase format since the 2024-2025 season.
Thirty-six clubs compete in a single league table. Each side plays eight different opponents, four at home and four away, rather than the six matches in a group of four that the old format produced. The top eight in the final standings qualify directly for the round of 16. The clubs finishing ninth to 24th enter a two-legged knockout play-off for the remaining places, and everyone from 25th down is eliminated.
From the round of 16 onwards the competition is straight knockout football over two legs, until the one-off final. The winners qualify automatically for the following season's Champions League league phase, which makes the Europa League the shortest route into Europe's premier competition and explains why every participating club takes it seriously.
