Stadium Features & Weather Considerations
Roof Coverage
Turf Moor has a fixed roof covering the stands, but it is open above the pitch. Most seats in the lower and middle rows of all four stands are well-protected from rain, while upper corners (particularly the northeast and northwest sections) are more exposed. The front rows of each stand, especially rows 1–10, can get wet in heavy rain as the roof overhang doesn't extend far enough.
Weather During Football Season
Burnley's location in Lancashire means the weather can be unpredictable year-round. From August to October, expect mild temperatures (12–18°C) with frequent rain—bring a waterproof jacket. November through March brings cold conditions (2–8°C) with biting winds, especially in corner sections. Evening matches from November onwards can be particularly cold. April and May are generally milder (10–15°C) but still prone to showers.
Wind Exposure
The open corners of Turf Moor create wind tunnels, making upper corner sections noticeably windier than central areas. Layer your clothing for comfort.
Sun Position
For 3pm Saturday kick-offs in autumn and spring, the sun can be low in the western sky, potentially affecting views from the eastern (Cricket Field) Stand. This is rarely a significant issue but worth noting if you're particularly sensitive to glare.
What to Bring
Layers are essential from November to March. A waterproof jacket is advisable year-round. Umbrellas are banned for safety reasons.

Why Visit Turf Moor?
Turf Moor delivers one of the most authentic football experiences in England. With its rich history, close-to-the-pitch design, passionate supporter culture, and strong community identity, it remains a must-visit ground for football fans who value tradition over corporate polish.
Whether you're a lifelong Burnley supporter, a neutral football fan, or a travelling away supporter, Turf Moor offers atmosphere, heritage, and intensity that few modern stadiums can replicate.
Best Seating to Leave Quickly After the Match
If you need to catch a train immediately after the match or have a long drive home, strategic seating can save you 15–20 minutes.
Fastest Exits
- Jimmy McIlroy Stand, Lower Tier (sections nearest the exits): Ideal if you're catching a train from Burnley Manchester Road. These sections have direct access toward Yorkshire Street. Leave at 85 minutes or immediately at full-time for the fastest escape.
- Bob Lord Stand, Lower Sections: Good access to Brunshaw Road and nearby parking areas.
Slowest Exits
- Upper tier corners of any stand, narrow stairways cause bottlenecks
- James Hargreaves Stand upper tier, spiral staircases slow exits
Alternative Strategy
Rather than leaving early (and missing the match), wait 15–20 minutes post-match. Crowds clear significantly during this time. The Bishop Blaize pub or Burnley Cricket Club are good places to wait out the rush.
Best Seating Sections During Bad Weather
Turf Moor’s roof covers the stands but not the pitch, meaning rain protection varies by seat.
Fully Protected Sections
- James Hargreaves Stand, rows 10 and higher (both tiers)
- Jimmy McIlroy Stand, rows 10 and higher (both tiers)
- Bob Lord Stand, rows 15 and higher
- Cricket Field Stand, middle sections, rows 12 and higher
Partially Protected Sections
- Front rows (1–10) in all stands
- Corner sections, wind can drive rain sideways
Most Exposed Sections
- Upper tier corners (northeast, northwest, southeast, southwest)
General Advice: Bring a waterproof jacket regardless of seat location. Umbrellas are banned for safety reasons.
Best Time to Enter Turf Moor by Seating Section
Turnstiles open 90 minutes before kick-off. For most matches, arriving 45–60 minutes early allows you to clear security, find your seat, grab refreshments, and soak up the atmosphere without rushing.
Section-Specific Timing
- James Hargreaves Stand (North, Upper Tier): Arrive 60+ minutes early. This two-tiered stand has spiral staircases that create bottlenecks 30 minutes before kick-off. The upper tier requires a longer climb.
- Jimmy McIlroy Stand (South, Upper Tier): Arrive 50–60 minutes early for upper tier seats. Lower tier can arrive 40 minutes before without issues.
- Bob Lord Stand (West): Single-tiered stand with good access. Arrive 40–45 minutes before kick-off.
- Cricket Field Stand / David Fishwick Stand (East, Away Section): Arrive 50–60 minutes early. Away sections typically experience thorough security searches, and this stand shares space with home supporters, creating higher foot traffic. Turnstiles 48–55 (entrance P) serve away fans.
Peak Entry Times: 30–15 minutes before kick-off is the busiest period at turnstiles. Avoid this window if you want a stress-free entry.
Big Matches: For derby matches or high-profile fixtures, add an extra 15 minutes to the recommendations above.
