The 2. Bundesliga is the only second division in the world where a former European champion, a nine-time national champion and a club playing in a 74,649-seat Olympic stadium can all be in the same relegation-and-promotion scrap. Germany's second tier draws crowds that most top divisions in Europe would envy, keeps its terraces standing and its tickets cheap, and produces a promotion race that is usually harder to call than the title race one league above.

How to buy 2. Bundesliga tickets in 2026

German clubs sell most of their capacity to members and season ticket holders, and the cheap standing terraces are the first thing to go. For a visitor from abroad, that means the fixture you want is often listed as sold out weeks before you land. LiveFootballTickets.com holds a real-time inventory of 2. Bundesliga tickets for all eighteen clubs, including Hertha BSC Berlin tickets, FC Kaiserslautern tickets, FC Nuremberg tickets, FC St. Pauli tickets and VfL Wolfsburg tickets. Follow these steps to book:

  1. Select the match you want to attend and click 'View Tickets'.
  2. Select the area you would like to sit within the stadium on the right-hand side.
  3. Select the number of tickets you would like to purchase.
  4. Click on the green 'Buy' button.
  5. Complete the order form using your personal details.
  6. Don't forget to check all your information is correct.
  7. Click 'Make Payment'.
  8. The tickets are now yours!

German 2. Bundesliga tickets

Eighteen clubs, 34 matchdays and 306 matches, played from early August to late May with a winter break in between. The 2026-2027 season features Hertha BSC, 1. FC Nürnberg, 1. FC Kaiserslautern, Hannover 96, Karlsruher SC, Dynamo Dresden, 1. FC Magdeburg, VfL Wolfsburg, FC St. Pauli, Arminia Bielefeld, VfL Bochum, Eintracht Braunschweig, Energie Cottbus, Darmstadt 98, SpVgg Greuther Fürth, VfL Osnabrück, Holstein Kiel and 1. FC Heidenheim. We list tickets for all of them, home and away, and we take care of your booking so your tickets arrive in time for kick-off.

Why you should book your 2. Bundesliga tickets at Livefootballtickets.com

German ticketing is built around members. Clubs release the bulk of their capacity to season ticket holders first, then to members, and standing tickets often never reach general sale at all. Add the 50+1 ownership rule and the clubs' own restrictions on resale, and a visitor without a membership has very little route in for a promotion six-pointer or a derby. As a marketplace we give you that route.

Trust

Trust is the first thing anyone weighs up when buying a ticket from a marketplace, so we put our guarantee in front of everything else. Every ticket sold through LiveFootballTickets.com comes with our 150% guarantee: if something unexpected happens with your order, you get a full refund plus 50% extra shop credit. Sellers on our platform are vetted before they can list, and prices are set by those sellers in competition with each other.

We have been asking customers about their experience for twenty years, and we have now passed 20,000 reviews on Trustpilot with a score of 4.7 out of 5. The qualities customers mention most often are:

  • Positive interactions with customer service
  • Happy with the ordering process
  • Speed of ticket delivery
  • Positive experience with the seating

You can read all of our reviews on our Trustpilot profile.

24/7 available

The 2. Bundesliga spreads its matchdays across Friday evening, Saturday afternoon, the Saturday evening Top-Spiel and Sunday, and fixtures move for television with a few weeks' notice. Our customer service team is available around the clock, so whatever time your match ends up kicking off and wherever you are travelling from, there is someone to speak to.

Wide range of 2. Bundesliga tickets available

At the moment you're reading this we have 93 German 2. Bundesliga tickets available across 58 upcoming events, covering all eighteen clubs. Our sellers restock constantly, so if the match or the block you want is not listed today, come back in a few days and the inventory will have moved.

Experience

We have been selling football tickets since 2006 and German football has been part of our inventory throughout. Colleagues across every department have been with us for more than fifteen years, which matters most on the fixtures where the details get complicated: high-risk derbies with restricted away allocations, kick-off times moved for broadcast, and clubs that run their own membership rules.

2. Bundesliga stadiums 2026-2027

This is where the division makes its case. Four grounds hold more than 45,000, the Olympiastadion in Berlin holds nearly 75,000, and almost every stadium in the league keeps large standing terraces behind the goal. Below are all eighteen 2026-2027 2. Bundesliga stadiums.

Capacities include standing areas. For matches classed as high-risk, and for European or cup fixtures where terraces have to be converted to seats, the usable capacity is lower than the figure shown.

2. Bundesliga ticket prices and availability last updated 06/10/2026.

2. Bundesliga stadium statistics

  • Largest stadium: Olympiastadion Berlin (74,649), bigger than all but a couple of Bundesliga grounds
  • Smallest stadium: Voith-Arena (15,000), 1. FC Heidenheim
  • Total capacity: around 558,000 seats and standing places across 18 stadiums
  • Average capacity: around 31,000 per stadium
  • Grounds over 45,000: 4 (Berlin, Nuremberg, Kaiserslautern, Hanover)
  • Clubs from Lower Saxony: 4 (Hannover 96, Eintracht Braunschweig, VfL Wolfsburg, VfL Osnabrück)
  • Clubs from the former East Germany: 3 (Dynamo Dresden, Energie Cottbus, 1. FC Magdeburg)
  • Promoted from the 3. Liga: VfL Osnabrück and Energie Cottbus
  • Down from the Bundesliga: VfL Wolfsburg, 1. FC Heidenheim and FC St. Pauli

Derbies, fallen giants and the matches worth travelling for

The 2. Bundesliga is not a division of small clubs having a good year. It is a division full of clubs that used to win things, and that is what makes the fixture list worth reading properly.

Hertha BSC

Two German championships, a Champions League campaign in 1999 and a home ground that seats 74,649. Hertha have been out of the Bundesliga since 2023 and the Olympiastadion is still the biggest stage in the division by a distance. On a full matchday there is nothing else like it at this level anywhere in Europe.

1. FC Kaiserslautern

Four German championships, and the only club ever to win the Bundesliga the season immediately after being promoted, in 1998. The Fritz-Walter-Stadion sits on the Betzenberg above the town, holds 49,327 and remains one of the most intimidating away days in German football.

1. FC Nürnberg

Nine German championships, more than any club except Bayern Munich, though the last of them came in 1968. The Max-Morlock-Stadion holds 49,923 and the club has now spent eight consecutive seasons in the second tier, the longest current run in the division alongside Hannover 96 and Karlsruher SC.

VfL Wolfsburg

Bundesliga champions in 2009 and German cup winners in 2015, Wolfsburg were relegated from the top flight for the first time in their history at the end of 2025/26. Their presence, together with Hannover 96, Eintracht Braunschweig and VfL Osnabrück, means the 2026-2027 2. Bundesliga has four clubs from Lower Saxony while the Bundesliga has none, for the first time since 1996/97.

The derbies

  • Franconian derby: 1. FC Nürnberg v SpVgg Greuther Fürth, one of the oldest and most bitter rivalries in German football, with the two grounds barely ten kilometres apart
  • Lower Saxony derby: Hannover 96 v Eintracht Braunschweig, historically the most heavily policed fixture in the region, with VfL Wolfsburg and VfL Osnabrück adding further local meetings this season
  • Eastern derbies: Dynamo Dresden, 1. FC Magdeburg and Energie Cottbus, three of the biggest names in East German football, all in the same division
  • Southwest rivalry: 1. FC Kaiserslautern v Karlsruher SC, a fixture with decades of history behind it
  • Hamburg: FC St. Pauli at the Millerntor, the most internationally recognised club culture in the league

What is at stake

The top two go up automatically. Third place enters a two-legged play-off against the club that finishes sixteenth in the Bundesliga. At the other end, the bottom two drop into the 3. Liga and sixteenth place plays off against the third-placed club from that division. In 2026-2027 those play-offs fall on 28 May and 1 June 2027.

History and honours in the 2. Bundesliga

Add up what the eighteen clubs in this season's division have won and the total looks nothing like a second tier.

What these clubs have won

  • 1. FC Nürnberg, nine German championships, a record for any club outside Bayern Munich.
  • 1. FC Kaiserslautern, four German championships, the last in 1998 as a newly promoted side.
  • Hertha BSC, German champions in 1930 and 1931.
  • VfL Wolfsburg, Bundesliga champions in 2009 and cup winners in 2015.
  • Dynamo Dresden, eight East German championships, more than any club except Berliner FC Dynamo.
  • 1. FC Magdeburg, three East German championships and the 1974 European Cup Winners' Cup, still the only major European trophy won by a club from the East.
  • Eintracht Braunschweig, German champions in 1967 and the first club in the country to carry a sponsor on its shirt.

The league itself

The 2. Bundesliga was founded in 1974 as two regional divisions, Nord and Süd, and became a single nationwide league in 1981. The 3. Liga was introduced below it in 2008, and the promotion and relegation play-offs against the divisions above and below returned with it. Fifty-three seasons in, the division has developed a character of its own: full grounds, standing terraces, low ticket prices and a promotion race that regularly goes to the final matchday.

Why the crowds are what they are

Germany kept its terraces when England removed theirs, and it kept its prices low when most of Europe raised theirs. Combined with the 50+1 rule, which keeps member associations in control of their clubs, the result is a second division that is regularly described as the best attended in world football. Several 2. Bundesliga clubs draw larger crowds than mid-table sides in some of Europe's top divisions.

About the German 2. Bundesliga

Format

Eighteen clubs play each other twice, home and away, for 34 matchdays and 306 matches in total. There are no conferences and no play-off system for the title: the club at the top on the final matchday is champion of the division and goes up. Second place goes up automatically alongside them, and third place enters the promotion play-off.

The season calendar

The 2026-2027 season began on 7 August 2026, three weeks before the Bundesliga, and runs to 23 May 2027. Matchday 16 on 20 December 2026 is the last before the winter break, with play resuming on 15 January 2027. That break is one of the reasons a January trip to Germany needs checking against the calendar before you book flights.

When matches are played

Fixtures are spread across Friday evening, Saturday afternoon, the Saturday evening Top-Spiel at 20:30 and Sunday. The Saturday evening match is shown live on free-to-air television in Germany, and selections are usually confirmed several weeks ahead. Kick-off times for later matchdays are frequently still open when tickets first go on sale.

Tickets, terraces and matchday

Most grounds in the division keep large standing terraces, which are the cheapest tickets in the stadium and almost never reach general sale. Seated areas are where visitors realistically end up, and they are still inexpensive by the standards of England, Spain or Italy. Many clubs include local public transport in the ticket, though the rules differ by city, so check the club page before you buy a separate travel ticket. German grounds are increasingly cashless, usually operating a stadium card for food and drink.
