Liverpool Announce Plans to Redevelop Anfield

Thousands of Liverpool fans have breathed a sigh of relief after managing director Ian Ayre confirmed the club's plans to redevelop Anfield rather than moving to a new site. Owner John W Henry is well aware of the history that surrounds Liverpool's famous stadium, and it seems that the American billionaire played a large part in the decision to remain at the club's spiritual home in Stanley Park.Rumours of a move to a new stadium have been rife for well over a decade now, as Liverpool look for ways to improve their financial clout. However, it has now been confirmed that it is the board's intention to redevelop Anfield and increase the current capacity of 45,000 to 60,000. Increasing the capacity of Anfield will be a major challenge for developers, however. Surrounded by housing and the city's most famous public park, the ground's potential for enlargement is limited. However, it is believed that the Anfield Road and Main Stand sections of the stadium have been earmarked for expansion. The expansion plans are part of a wider regeneration scheme in the area, that will include new housing and various leisure facilities.
