Manchester City blow title race wide open
The Premier League title race is back on. Manchester City beat Arsenal 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium to close the gap to just three points with a game in hand. Erling Haaland's second-half winner settled a pulsating encounter between the top two. Later on Sunday, Virgil van Dijk headed a 100th-minute winner as Liverpool beat Everton 2-1 in a dramatic Merseyside derby.
Manchester City 2-1 Arsenal: Title race transforms
This was the match that could have sealed Arsenal's first title since 2004. Instead, it breathed new life into Manchester City's hopes of a remarkable comeback.
At the Etihad Stadium, the tension was palpable. Arsenal arrived with a six-point cushion but knowing their recent form – four consecutive domestic defeats – had given City hope. Outside the ground, vendors sold water bottles with Arsenal logos, mocking the "bottlers" tag that has haunted the club.
City started sharply. Antoine Semenyo rattled the post early on, but Arsenal steadied themselves and began to dominate. Just when it seemed the visitors had settled, Rayan Cherki produced a moment of magic. The French playmaker picked up the ball, danced past three defenders, and slotted home to make it 1-0 after 16 minutes.
The lead lasted just two minutes. Gianluigi Donnarumma, City's goalkeeper, made a catastrophic error with the ball at his feet. His misplaced pass went straight to Kai Havertz, who gleefully accepted the gift and fired into an empty net. The Emirates contingent erupted.
Second half: Haaland decisive
City regrouped at half-time and emerged as the dominant force. Donnarumma made amends with a sharp save to deny Havertz from close range, keeping his side in the contest.
Arsenal remained dangerous on the break. Eberechi Eze beat his man and crashed a shot against the post. Minutes later, Gabriel rose highest from a corner but his header also struck the woodwork. The title seemed destined for north London.
Then came the decisive moment. In the 65th minute, Erling Haaland finally escaped Gabriel's clutches. The Norwegian had battled the Brazilian centre-back all afternoon, and when the chance came, he made no mistake – 2-1 to City.
The closing stages were combustible. Haaland and Gabriel went head-to-head, literally, with the Arsenal defender appearing to make a headbutt motion. He escaped with just a yellow card, but the frustration was clear.
Arsenal could not find an equaliser. Four defeats in a row in domestic competition. The title that seemed certain just weeks ago is now slipping away.
Title race: Everything to play for
| Pos | Team | P | Pts | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arsenal | 33 | 70 | 4 losses in a row |
| 2 | Manchester City | 32 | 67 | Game in hand vs Burnley |
If Manchester City beat Burnley on Wednesday, they will go top of the Premier League for the first time this season.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta remained defiant. "The confidence is not affected by this defeat," he said. "I believe in my players. Everything is still possible and we will not give up."
Arsenal also have a Champions League semi-final against Atlético Madrid to focus on – April 29 in Madrid and May 5 in London.
Liverpool 2-1 Everton: Van Dijk the hero
The Merseyside derby delivered late drama as Liverpool snatched victory in the 100th minute against Everton.
Mohamed Salah had given Arne Slot's side the lead, with Cody Gakpo providing the assist. But Everton, fighting to stay in the top half, hit back through Portuguese striker Beto to make it 1-1.
Liverpool pushed relentlessly for a winner as 11 minutes of stoppage time were added. Deep into that additional period, Virgil van Dijk rose highest to meet a corner and powered a header into the net. Anfield exploded.
The victory extends Liverpool's lead over Chelsea in the race for fifth place to seven points with five matches remaining. After the misery of recent weeks, this was a moment to savour for Slot and his players.
