World Cup 2026: All 48 Qualified Teams, Groups and Fixtures
The wait is over. After months of qualification campaigns across six continents, the complete 48-team lineup for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been confirmed. The final spots were decided through the UEFA and intercontinental playoffs in late March 2026, with Iraq's 2-1 victory over Bolivia completing the field. All 48 nations heading to North America this summer are now known — and the group stage draw produces some mouth-watering fixtures from the very first round.
The tournament runs from 11 June to 19 July 2026 across 16 venues in the United States, Canada and Mexico. A total of 104 matches will be played — up from 64 in Qatar 2022 — with 12 four-team groups feeding into an expanded round of 32. You can browse all available World Cup 2026 tickets now, including group stage and knockout rounds.
How the Final Playoff Spots Were Decided
The last six places at World Cup 2026 were settled through the UEFA playoffs and the FIFA intercontinental playoff tournament, held in Mexico.
In the UEFA playoffs, four teams emerged from four separate paths:
- Bosnia and Herzegovina beat Italy on penalties in the Path A final — one of the biggest upsets of the entire qualification process, sending the four-time world champions home
- Czechia defeated Denmark on penalties in the Path D final
- Sweden beat Poland in Path C to end Poland's World Cup hopes
- Türkiye edged Kosovo in Path B to seal their place
In the intercontinental playoffs, two finals were played:
- DR Congo defeated Jamaica 1-0 to become the first side from central Africa to qualify since Zaire in 1974
- Iraq beat Bolivia 2-1 to end a 40-year wait for World Cup qualification, completing the 48-team field
Notable Absences
Not every major nation made it. The headline casualty is Italy, who were eliminated by Bosnia and Herzegovina on penalties — a stunning exit for the 2006 world champions who have now missed two of the last three World Cups. Poland also missed out after defeat to Sweden, ending Robert Lewandowski's World Cup career. Among African nations, Nigeria fell at the final playoff hurdle, losing to DR Congo. Jamaica, despite a strong campaign, were narrowly beaten in their intercontinental playoff final.
Debutants at World Cup 2026
Four nations will appear at a World Cup for the very first time in 2026:
- Cape Verde — a remarkable achievement for the Atlantic island nation
- Curaçao — the small Caribbean island making history
- Jordan — reaching the tournament for the first time through the Asian confederation
- Uzbekistan — qualifying as one of Asia's standout performers
All 48 Qualified Teams by Group
The 48 nations are divided into 12 groups of four. Each team plays three matches in the group stage, with the top two from each group plus the eight best third-place finishers advancing to the round of 32.
Group A
Mexico | South Korea | South Africa | Czechia
Mexico open the entire tournament against South Africa on 11 June at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City — a replay of the 2010 World Cup opener. A tough group for the hosts, with South Korea offering dangerous attacking quality and Czechia fresh from their playoff victory over Denmark.
Group B
Canada | Switzerland | Qatar | Bosnia and Herzegovina
Canada play all their group matches on home soil, opening against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto on 12 June. Bosnia arrive as giant-killers after dumping Italy out. Switzerland are likely favourites to top the group.
Group C
Brazil | Morocco | Scotland | Haiti
Brazil are strong favourites in Group C, but Morocco — World Cup semi-finalists in 2022 — will push them. Scotland make a rare World Cup appearance, while Haiti are the group's underdogs.
Group D
USA | Australia | Paraguay | Türkiye
The host nation USA open on 12 June against Paraguay at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. Australia and Türkiye make this a competitive group, with all four sides capable of making the round of 32.
Group E
Germany | Ecuador | Ivory Coast | Curaçao
Germany are overwhelming favourites, but Ecuador and Ivory Coast give this group genuine quality. Curaçao make their World Cup debut here — a historic moment for the island nation.
Group F
Netherlands | Japan | Tunisia | Sweden
Netherlands are the clear favourites, with Japan — Asia's most consistent World Cup performers — likely to push them. Sweden arrive on form after their playoff win over Poland. Tunisia are the group's outsiders.
Group G
Belgium | Iran | Egypt | New Zealand
Belgium's golden generation may be ageing, but they remain favourites. Iran and Egypt provide interesting mid-group battles, while New Zealand face the toughest of tasks.
Group H
Spain | Uruguay | Saudi Arabia | Cape Verde
Spain enter as FIFA's top-ranked team and are among the tournament favourites. Uruguay bring their usual South American steel, while Cape Verde make their debut having earned their place through the intercontinental route.
Group I
France | Senegal | Norway | Iraq
A fascinating group. France are the class act, but Senegal — African champions — and Norway, boasting Erling Haaland, make this one of the most watchable groups of the tournament. Iraq complete the group after their dramatic playoff win.
Group J
Argentina | Austria | Algeria | Jordan
Defending champions Argentina are in Pot 2 and drawn here alongside Austria, Algeria and debutants Jordan. Argentina will be expected to top the group, though Algeria present a physical challenge.
Group K
Portugal | Colombia | Uzbekistan | DR Congo
Portugal, with or without Cristiano Ronaldo at his best, are favourites. Colombia are a genuine threat in what could be the tightest group of the tournament. Uzbekistan and DR Congo make their respective marks as newcomers.
Group L
England | Croatia | Panama | Ghana
England face familiar foes Croatia — their nemesis from the 2018 World Cup semi-final — alongside Panama and Ghana. England are clear favourites to progress, but Croatia always raise their game against the Three Lions. Get your England World Cup 2026 tickets while they're still available.
Key Fixtures to Watch in the Group Stage
With 48 teams and 12 groups, the group stage runs from 11 to 27 June 2026. A few standout first-round fixtures to mark in your calendar:
- Mexico vs South Africa — 11 June, Estadio Azteca, Mexico City. The tournament opener. A replay of the famous 2010 World Cup first match.
- USA vs Paraguay — 12 June, SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles. The host nation's opening match in front of a packed home crowd.
- Canada vs Bosnia and Herzegovina — 12 June, BMO Field, Toronto. Canada's home opener against the team that just knocked out Italy.
- France vs Norway — Group I. Mbappé vs Haaland. One of the most anticipated club-level duels of the tournament could materialise here.
- England vs Croatia — Group L. The 2018 World Cup semi-final rematch. England will be desperate to settle old scores.
- Argentina vs Colombia — across Group J and K respectively, both will be must-watch, with the South American giants likely to meet in the knockouts.
- Brazil vs Morocco — Group C. A repeat of what many expected to be the 2022 final. Expect fireworks.
The Road to the Final
Following the group stage, 32 teams advance to the knockout rounds. The format then follows a straight single-elimination structure through the round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. FIFA has introduced a pathway system designed to prevent the two highest-ranked teams — Spain (ranked 1st) and Argentina (ranked 2nd) — from meeting before the final, provided both progress as group winners.
The World Cup Final takes place on 19 July 2026 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. If you're targeting the ultimate matchday experience, World Cup Final tickets are available now — book early as availability at this stage of the tournament is always extremely limited.
