Arsenal extend lead as City drop points
Arsenal's title charge received a major boost on Wednesday night as they beat Brighton 1-0 while Manchester City could only draw 2-2 at home to Nottingham Forest. The Gunners now lead by seven points with eight matches remaining. Elsewhere, Chelsea thrashed Aston Villa 4-1 thanks to a João Pedro hattrick, while Manchester United's unbeaten run under Michael Carrick came to an end at Newcastle.
Brighton 0-1 Arsenal: Verbruggen error gifts Gunners victory
Arsenal secured a vital 1-0 win at Brighton, but they needed some good fortune to take all three points from the Amex Stadium.
The only goal came after just nine minutes in unfortunate circumstances for Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. Bukayo Saka's shot took a deflection and struck the back of Verbruggen's heel before rolling into the net. Jurriën Timber was credited with the assist.
Brighton were the better side for much of the match, but Arsenal's defence held firm to secure what could prove to be a crucial three points in the title race. As news filtered through of Manchester City's draw, the away end at the Amex erupted.
Manchester City 2-2 Nottingham Forest: Title hopes take a hit
Manchester City's title challenge suffered a significant blow as they were held to a 2-2 draw by relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest at the Etihad Stadium.
Pep Guardiola's side dominated the first half but had to wait until the 30th minute for the breakthrough. Rayan Cherki set up Antoine Semenyo to open the scoring, and City looked set for a comfortable evening.
Forest had other ideas. Morgan Gibbs-White equalised ten minutes into the second half to stun the home crowd. Rodri appeared to have won it for City when he restored their lead, but Elliot Anderson struck 15 minutes from time to earn a valuable point for the visitors.
Tijjani Reijnders remained on the bench throughout the match, continuing his recent spell out of the starting lineup.
The dropped points are costly. City are now seven points behind Arsenal, though they still have a game in hand. With the EFL Cup Final and league clash against Arsenal still to come, Guardiola's side cannot afford any more slip-ups.

Eight matchdays remain. Arsenal and City will face each other at the Etihad on April 19 in what could be the title decider – if City can stay in touch until then.
Aston Villa 1-4 Chelsea: Pedro hattrick fires Blues
Chelsea kept their Champions League hopes alive with a stunning 4-1 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park.
The hosts made a dream start, Douglas Luiz scoring after just two minutes following a Leon Bailey assist. But Chelsea responded emphatically, with João Pedro scoring twice before half-time to turn the match on its head.
Cole Palmer extended the lead early in the second half before Pedro completed his hattrick on 64 minutes to seal an emphatic victory.
The win moves Chelsea up to fifth place, just three points behind Villa with nine matches remaining. With an FA Cup tie against Wrexham this weekend and a Champions League clash with PSG to follow, confidence is high at Stamford Bridge.
Newcastle 2-1 Manchester United: Carrick's unbeaten run ends
Manchester United's seven-match unbeaten run under interim manager Michael Carrick came to an end with a 2-1 defeat at Newcastle United.
The match exploded into life in first-half stoppage time. Jacob Ramsey received a second yellow card for Newcastle, but the ten men took the lead moments later when Anthony Gordon converted from the penalty spot.
Casemiro headed United level before the break, and with a man advantage for the entire second half, Carrick's side were expected to push on for victory. Instead, they failed to create clear-cut chances despite 45 minutes of pressure.
Joshua Zirkzee and Tyrell Malacia were both introduced from the bench, but couldn't find a breakthrough. Then, deep into stoppage time, William Osula broke clear on the counter and fired home to complete a famous victory for Newcastle.
United remain third but missed a golden opportunity to pull further clear of their rivals after both Liverpool and Villa lost on the same evening.
