Premier League weekend review: shock results rock titlerace
The Premier League served up a weekend of dramatic twists as the title race took several unexpected turns, with Arsenal maintaining their position at the summit while Liverpool's alarming slump continued.
Arsenal stay top with hard-fought derby win
Arsenal remain firmly in control at the top of the Premier League table after grinding out a crucial 1-0 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage. The Gunners' winning goal came from Belgian international Leandro Trossard, who converted from close range after Bukayo Saka's corner was flicked on by Gabriel.
Mikel Arteta's side thought they had taken the lead in the first half through a stunning strike from Ricardo Calafiori, only for the goal to be ruled out. Despite a nervy nine minutes of added time, Arsenal saw out the victory to reach 19 points from eight matches, extending their lead at the top of the table.
Defender Jurriën Timber played the full 90 minutes for the north London side, helping secure a vital clean sheet in what was a typically tight London derby.
Liverpool's crisis deepens with fourth consecutive defeat
The weekend's biggest shock came at Anfield, where Liverpool suffered a devastating 2-1 defeat to bitter rivals Manchester United – their fourth consecutive loss in all competitions.
United stunned the home crowd when Bryan Mbeumo escaped Virgil van Dijk's attention to fire home after just over a minute. Cody Gakpo hit the woodwork three times before finally equalizing with a close-range finish in the 78th minute, but Liverpool's joy was short-lived.
Just six minutes later, Harry Maguire rose highest to head home Bruno Fernandes' cross, securing United's first victory at Anfield since January 2016, when Louis van Gaal was still in charge. Gakpo missed a golden opportunity to equalize late on, leaving Arne Slot's side shell-shocked.
The defeat raises serious questions about Liverpool's form despite their summer investment of over £365 million on Alexander Isak (£145m), Florian Wirtz (£125m), and Hugo Ekitiké (£95m). The Reds now sit third with 15 points, having already lost three times in eight league matches, just one fewer than they managed in the entire previous campaign when they won the title. Liverpool will look to bounce back in the Champions League against Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday before hosting Brentford next Saturday.
Manchester City return to form with Haaland double
Manchester City moved back to the top of the table on Saturday with a 2-0 home victory over Everton, courtesy of two second-half goals from Erling Haaland.
Pep Guardiola's side struggled to break down a compact Everton defense in the first half, with Tijjani Reijnders and the City attack finding few openings. However, the Norwegian striker changed the game after the interval, first heading home from a perfectly delivered cross by O'Reilly in the 57th minute.
Just four minutes later, Haaland doubled the advantage with a thunderous strike from outside the box after excellent work from Savinho. The Brazilian winger cut inside from the left before laying the ball back for Haaland to unleash an unstoppable shot past Jordan Pickford.
Tottenham stumble in race for top four
Tottenham Hotspur, featuring Micky van de Ven and Xavi Simons, missed the chance to move into second place after falling to a 2-1 home defeat against Aston Villa.
Spurs started brightly when Rodrigo Bentancur fired them ahead after just five minutes, but Villa showed resilience to equalize before halftime through Morgan Rogers' long-range effort that caught Guglielmo Vicario off guard.
The visitors completed the turnaround when substitute Emiliano Buendía found the far corner after being introduced for Donyell Malen. The defeat leaves Tottenham in sixth place, while Aston Villa climb into European qualification spots ahead of their Europa League clash with Go Ahead Eagles on Thursday.
Chelsea cruise past Forest as Postecoglou pays the price
Chelsea recorded a comfortable 3-0 away victory at Nottingham Forest, a result that proved to be the final straw for Forest manager Ange Postecoglou, who was sacked just 30 minutes after the final whistle.
Despite missing star midfielder Cole Palmer through injury and with manager Enzo Maresca watching from the stands due to suspension, Chelsea dominated the second half. Teenage defender Josh Acheampong opened the scoring with a fine header before Pedro Neto curled home a free-kick for 2-0.
Captain Reece James added a third from a corner, though late red card for Malo Gusto (two yellows) took some shine off the victory. The result leaves Chelsea seventh as they prepare for Wednesday's Champions League clash with Ajax.
Postecoglou's dismissal came after just 39 days in charge, during which Forest failed to win any of their eight matches under the Australian, making him the club's worst-performing manager in a century. Greek owner Evangelos Marinakis reportedly left his seat early to deliver the news personally to Postecoglou.
Title race implications
With Arsenal sitting pretty on 19 points, Manchester City breathing down their necks, and Liverpool in freefall on 15 points, the Premier League title race is already taking shape. The Gunners' consistency and defensive solidity contrast sharply with Liverpool's vulnerability, despite their significant summer spending.
As the season approaches its crucial winter period, Arsenal will be delighted to have established an early advantage, while Arne Slot faces mounting pressure to arrest Liverpool's alarming decline before their title challenge slips away completely.
