>Cole Palmer breaks Hasselbaink’s record in derby win

December 9th, 2024 16:36

Chelsea triumphed in a pulsating London derby on Sunday, overturning a 2-0 deficit to defeat Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 in dramatic fashion. Cole Palmer stole the show with a record-breaking performance, becoming directly involved in 38 Premier League goals in 2024, surpassing the long-standing Chelsea record held by Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

A nightmare start for Chelsea

Despite coming into the match on a high after three consecutive wins, including a 5-1 demolition of Southampton midweek, Chelsea was caught off guard early. Tottenham, led by manager Ange Postecoglou, capitalized on two costly slips by Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella in the opening minutes. In the fifth minute, Dominic Solanke converted a pinpoint cross from Brennan Johnson at the near post, marking his first league goal since early November. Just six minutes later, Dejan Kulusevski doubled Spurs’ lead, calmly slotting home after a Pedro Porro assist. Chelsea found themselves reeling, but they managed to stay composed despite the shaky start.

Sancho sparks the comeback

Chelsea began to claw their way back into the game through Jadon Sancho. The winger, on loan from Manchester United, cut inside and fired a curling shot into the net in the 21st minute, reducing the deficit to 2-1. This marked Sancho’s second goal in as many matches, having also scored late against Southampton. Before halftime, tensions flared when Moisés Caicedo escaped a red card for a dangerous challenge on Pape Sarr. Chelsea’s luck held, and they entered the break down by just one goal.

Palmer leads the charge

Chelsea returned to the pitch determined to equalize. Spurs’ backup goalkeeper Fraser Forster, filling in for the injured Guglielmo Vicario, made several outstanding saves to keep the hosts ahead. However, when Yves Bissouma fouled Caicedo in the penalty area, the referee awarded Chelsea a penalty. Palmer stepped up and converted with composure, leveling the score at 2-2 and writing his name into Chelsea history by surpassing Hasselbaink’s record for most goal involvements in a calendar year.

Drama in the final act

Tottenham missed a golden opportunity to retake the lead when Heung-Min Son, capitalizing on a mix-up in Chelsea’s defense, fired wide of the goal with only Robert Sánchez to beat. Chelsea punished Spurs’ wastefulness moments later. Palmer sliced through the Spurs defense and delivered a deflected pass to Enzo Fernández, who slotted the ball home to make it 3-2 for Chelsea. The drama continued when Sarr committed a clumsy foul in the box, gifting Chelsea another penalty. Palmer stepped up again and delivered an audacious Panenka past Forster, extending the lead to 4-2 and cementing his status as Chelsea’s star of the season. Spurs managed a late consolation goal through Son in stoppage time, but it wasn’t enough to deny Chelsea the victory.

Growing concerns for Spurs

The loss deepens Tottenham’s woes, with the team showing inconsistency and struggling to find momentum this season. To make matters worse, newly fit defender Micky van de Ven limped off injured late in the match, adding to Spurs’ defensive challenges. For Chelsea, this victory solidifies their position as title contenders. Palmer’s record-breaking form, combined with their resilience and attacking flair, keeps the Blues firmly in second place and within striking distance of the Premier League summit. Manager Enzo Maresca will hope his team can maintain this momentum as they continue their campaign for domestic glory.

Superb! Easy to purchase a ticket. I had a live customer service chat once, the staff member was so polite, helpful and informative. I loved the communication after purchase. On the match day they contacted me on WhatsApp if I want an upgrade on my tickets for free and after my confirmation I got my tickets within a minute. Great experience, thank you.

This is the best and most trusted website to get your tickets to any world event. I have used them 3 times throughout the years, I have used other sites for football matches and they are so transparent and fast, the first time I used them was in 2018 for a Roma match and then made the mistake to use a different site for the PSG match in April and they were terrible, from the website, customer service and responses. this is the only site I trust and use!

Bought 2 Club Wembley tickets less than 48 hours before the Championship Play Off Final. Good communication and tickets arrived the following day by email. No problems getting into the stadium and seats were great. Unfortunately my team’s performance was the only let down. Would definitely use this company again.
