In the last two days, we’ve seen two teams qualifying for the EFL Cup final. Chelsea overcame a 1-0 defeat from the first leg by destroying Middlesbrough with 6-1 at Stamford Bridge. Liverpool won their first leg with 2-1 and successfully defended this win with a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage. On the 25th of February the EFL Cup final goes between Chelsea and Liverpool. Liverpool is the record holder of the EFL Cup. They won the tournament 9 times, from which it was called the Carabao Cup once. At the same time, they lost four finals. Chelsea won the cup five times and finished runners-up on four occasions. Out of the 22 times these teams played a final in total, two of them were against each other. In 2005, when it was called the Football League Cup final and in 2022 when it was already called the Carabao Cup final.

2005 Football League Cup final

The 2005 edition was one of the EFL Cup finals with the biggest score with 5 goals in total. John Arne Riise opened the score for Liverpool already in the first minute. This was the first sign we were heading towards a final with loads of goals. Nevertheless it stayed quiet on the goal front for almost 80 minutes after the first goal. In the 79th minute an own goal by Steven Gerrard, brought Chelsea back in the game. With a 1-1 score, the match went into extra time. Didier Drogba opened 6 minutes of madness in the 17th minute of extra time by scoring the 2-1 for Chelsea. Mateja Kezman doubled the lead in the 22nd minute of extra time, and a minute later Antonio Nunez scored one back for Liverpool. After this goal things calmed down and Chelsea defended their lead all the way till the end.

2022 Carabao Cup final

We’ve started this article in an attempt to use the history of this match for a prediction. This 2022 edition shows us there is absolutely nothing to say about the upcoming final. Where the first on was goal galore, the second final between these teams ended in a 0-0 draw. Right before the end of extra time, Spanish goalkeeper Kepa was brought on for Mendy, to win them the penalty shoot out. Liverpool scored their first eleven penalties, before Kepa was going to take one for Chelsea. He missed and won the final for Liverpool.
