Manchester City’s start to the season

Manchester City already trail Liverpool by five points in the Premier League after only six matches. However, last weekend they put in an emphatic performance to beat Watford 8-0 which was the third-highest scoring margin in the Premier League era. It was also the fastest any team has gone into a 5-0 lead with it taking Guardiola’s men only 18 minutes to do so.

This result came off the back of a 3-2 loss the weekend before against Norwich. This was a result that really set City back because it means that their rivals Liverpool were able to create the 5 points gap so early in the season. Rodri claimed after the game that this was just a freak result and that next match they would “kill” their opponents which is pretty much exactly what they did.

City have been rocked by the injuries to their defense. Laporte has been ruled out until at least January and following this Stones also injured himself in training and is ruled up for a month. This leaves Otamendi as City’s only senior center back in the squad, however, Fernandinho has been used as a makeshift center back to cover and he looked to fit right in against Watford. This still doesn’t hide the fact that Guardiola did not properly replace Kompany when he left which is something that might come back to haunt him during the busy Christmas period.

City play their next game away at Everton, which is usually a tough game, however, Everton have been leaking goals at home recently so City should come out with a win, especially since they are full of confidence after last weekend. Following this weekend, they have some favorable fixtures coming up in which they should comfortably win and hope that Liverpool drop some points so they can close the gap before they have to travel to Anfield on the 10th of November for their first clash of the season.
