How the Portuguese League Cup works
Eight clubs qualify on the basis of the previous season's league tables: the top six from the Primeira Liga plus the champions and runners-up of Liga Portugal 2, with reserve teams excluded. The competition opens in late October with four single-leg quarter-finals, paired by league position and hosted by the higher-ranked club. The four winners go through to the final four, a short tournament staged at one neutral venue in early January, made up of two single-leg semi-finals and the final.

Can the holders defend the trophy?
Only if they qualify again through their league position. Because entry depends on the previous season's final standings, a winner who finishes outside the top six is not part of the next edition.
