Champions League Semi-Final: Real Madrid 1-0 Bayern Munich

Real Madrid beat 1-0 defending champions Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal tie yesterday at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

Karim Benzema scored from close range in the 19th minute following Fabio Coentrao’s cross from the left flank after a quick counterattack.

Cristiano Ronaldo returned from injury and started the game but was substituted for Gareth Bale midway through the second half as the Welsh started on the bench due to flu.

Bayern dominated possession from the beginning but could not find the net as Madrid defense worked hard not to concede the away goal.

Los Blancos looked always dangerous playing on the counterattack and could have doubled the lead but Ronaldo and Di Maria were off target.

Bayern pressed for an equalizer in the closing stages but substitute Mario Goetze and Thomas Muller were denied by a spectacular Iker Casillas.

The Germans claimed for a penalty when Muller appeared to have been brought down in the area by Xavi Alonso in stoppage time, but English referee Howard Webb took no further action.

Real will travel to Munich next week knowing they have a huge chance to qualify for the finals having not conceded a goal at home.
