UEFA announce new "Nations League"

UEFA, the governing body for European football, revealed that the 54 member associations have agreed the creation of a new tournament called the “UEFA Nations League”.

Although the exact format of the competition is yet to be finalized, it is set to start in September 2018 and will involve all 54 UEFA nations.

Teams will be divided into 4 different divisions according to their UEFA coefficient rankings. These four divisions will then be further separated into playing pools of either three or four teams.

Participants in each pool will play each other home and away between September and December. The group winners will either earn promotion to a higher division or qualify for the final four whilst the bottom teams will face relegation.

In addition, this new tournament will allow the countries with another chance to qualify for the UEFA EURO finals.

Four teams within each group, who have not already qualified for the finals, will qualify for play-offs in March 2020 with one side from each group joining the 20 nations who had already qualified through the European Qualifiers.

This would also mean that one of the weaker squads from the lowest division would be guaranteed a place at the European Championship.

UEFA president Michel Platini said this new format will replace the international friendlies that “neither the fans nor the players nor the media and nor the national associations want”

He said: "The friendlies don't really interest anybody. This is a good decision because nobody wants these friendlies."
