With the international break now upon us, the Premier League rounded off in style over the weekend, with high-scoring games, upsets, and even Arsenal conceding three goals. Here, we'll run you through the key fixtures from the weekend.
Manchester City secure victory but Brobbey steals the show
Manchester City continued their fine form over the weekend with an emphatic win over Sunderland. The game finished 5-3 in a contest that was more reminiscent of a basketball game than a football match. Goals from Enzo Fernandez, Rayan Cherki, Erling Haaland, and a brace from Antoine Semenyo were enough to secure the victory. However, it was Sunderland man Brian Brobbey who stole the show. The Dutch striker put in a sterling performance against City, bullying their defenders for 90 minutes and even bagging a hat-trick. Despite heading home with the match ball, Brobbey couldn't do enough to snatch a point against Enzo Maresca's side as they head into the international break top of the table with five wins from five.
Manchester United woes continue
Manchester United's poor start to the season continued over the weekend after scraping a 1-1 draw against fellow strugglers Fulham. The game began with a sleepy feel before springing into life late in the second half. Both sides created plenty of chances but struggled to make the most of them until Lisandro Martinez's unfortunate own goal midway through the second half gave Fulham the lead. United pushed hard for an equaliser and their efforts were rewarded when Matheus Cunha's long-range effort deflected off a Fulham defender and squirmed into the net.
Arsenal suffer heavy defeat at the hands of Brighton
Brighton continued their fine start to the season, beating reigning Premier League champions Arsenal 3-0. Goals from Groß, Kostoulas, and Chema Andrés were enough to knock the stuffing out of the Gunners, who seemed fatigued and struggled to force their way back into the game. The international break seems to have come at a good time for them.
Iraola successful on Bournemouth return
Andoni Iraola made his first return to Bournemouth over the weekend after leaving the club in the summer. Now managing Liverpool, the Spanish coach headed back to Merseyside with a smile on his face after Alexander Isak's goal was enough to hand his side all three points.Chelsea continue to look shaky at the back
There was a big surprise in the Premier League over the weekend as Brentford beat Chelsea 3-0. Goals from Jadon Anthony, Igor Thiago and Fabio Carvalho meant Keith Andrews' side looked comfortable against a team that has scored goals for fun this season. Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso will need to solve his side's defensive frailties quickly if they are to have any chance of competing for the title this season.
Spurs finally score a goal
There were mixed feelings at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when the final whistle finally went against Aston Villa. Although Spurs had scored their first goals of the Premier League season, they had unfortunately come as late consolation strikes in a 3-2 loss. Roberto De Zerbi’s side now sit rock bottom of the Premier League table with just two points, and it looks as though the woes of last season could be about to repeat themselves. The Italian coach will be pleased to usher in the international break as it will give him time to integrate some of the new signings who are not on duty with their countries.
