Atletico and Arsenal share the spoils in tense semi-final

30 April 2026 at 18:50

Atlético Madrid and Arsenal played out a tightly contested 1-1 draw in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final at the Estadio Metropolitano. Both goals came from the penalty spot, with Dutch referee Danny Makkelie central to the evening's key moments — awarding three spot kicks and seeing one overturned by VAR. The tie is perfectly poised ahead of next Tuesday's return at the Emirates Stadium.

A cautious opening, then Gyökeres breaks the deadlock

After Tuesday's extraordinary nine-goal spectacle between PSG and Bayern, the Metropolitano offered something altogether different: a tense, tactical battle between two sides far more comfortable grinding out results than trading goals. Both teams began cautiously, with former PSV winger Noni Madueke providing Arsenal's most threatening early moments down the right flank.

The game's first real chance fell to Julián Álvarez, whose fierce effort forced a fine diving save from Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya. Arsenal responded through Viktor Gyökeres, who set up Martin Ødegaard only for Johnny Cardoso to throw himself in the way of the Norwegian's shot. Madueke tried his luck from distance, but the game needed a spark.

It came from the penalty spot. Dávid Hancko — who spent last season at Feyenoord — was judged by Makkelie to have run into the back of Gyökeres, and the Swedish striker stepped up to deliver a powerful penalty straight down the middle, past a diving Jan Oblak: 0-1 to Arsenal going into the break.

Álvarez equalises, Griezmann hits the bar

A goal down at home, Atlético came out with more urgency in the second half. Álvarez tested Raya from a free kick and Ademola Lookman forced another good save, but Arsenal's defence — the best in this season's Champions League — held firm until the hour mark.

Then came the second penalty. A Marcos Llorente shot deflected against the arm of Ben White, Makkelie consulted the pitchside monitor, and pointed to the spot for the second time. Álvarez showed no mercy, hammering a cannonball into the top corner that left Raya with no chance: 1-1.

Atlético sensed blood. The 35-year-old Antoine Griezmann, who will leave the club this summer after close to 500 appearances across two spells, struck the crossbar with a powerful effort. Lookman tested Raya again. Arsenal were hanging on, and the withdrawal of the influential Ødegaard only deepened their defensive burden.

VAR controversy as Arsenal survive

With fifteen minutes remaining, Arsenal finally found a way forward and substitute Eberechi Eze appeared to win a third penalty after going down under a challenge from — again — Hancko. Makkelie pointed to the spot, but after lengthy VAR review the decision was reversed, prompting fury from Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta at full time.

"I am furious about this," Arteta said afterwards. "If you have to look at it thirteen times, it means it was not a clear error. If it is not a clear error, you cannot overturn it. This was a decisive moment in the tie."

Despite the controversy, Arsenal finished the game with renewed energy. Substitute Cristhian Mosquera came close with a fierce effort that Oblak had to deal with smartly. But neither side could find a winner, and a 1-1 draw leaves everything to play for in London.

The return leg takes place next Tuesday at the Emirates Stadium. The winners face either PSG or Bayern Munich in the Champions League final in Budapest on 30 May 2026.
