Simons brilliance not enough as Tottenham blow lead and slip
Tottenham Hotspur's relegation fears intensified after they surrendered a late lead to draw 2-2 with Brighton. Xavi Simons produced a moment of magic with a stunning goal and an assist, but Georginio Rutter's stoppage-time equaliser left Spurs in the bottom three. Elsewhere, Manchester United beat Chelsea 1-0 to extend the Blues' miserable run to four consecutive defeats.
Tottenham 2-2 Brighton: Heartbreak for Spurs
Tottenham Hotspur thought they had done enough to secure a vital victory in their battle for survival. They were wrong.
At the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Spurs took the lead five minutes before half-time. Xavi Simons delivered a perfect cross and Pedro Porro rose highest to head past Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. But the celebrations were short-lived – Kaoru Mitoma equalised shortly after to make it 1-1 at the break.
The second half was chaotic. Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke gifted possession to Simons in a dangerous area, and the Dutch international made him pay in spectacular fashion. Without hesitation, Simons curled the ball off the inside of the post and into the net.
The 22-year-old ripped off his shirt in wild celebration with the home supporters. It looked like the goal that would drag Tottenham out of the relegation zone. But football can be cruel.
Deep into stoppage time, Van Hecke made amends for his earlier error. The defender's cross found Georginio Rutter, who fired home to silence the stadium and snatch a point for Brighton.
Spurs who remain 18th in the table – inside the relegation zone. They sit one point behind West Ham, but crucially have played one game more.

Chelsea 0-1 Manchester United: Blues in freefall
Chelsea's season continues to unravel. A 1-0 home defeat to Manchester United at Stamford Bridge was their fourth consecutive loss.
The hosts thought they had taken the lead midway through the first half when Liam Delap tapped in from close range, but the offside flag denied them.
Minutes later, United struck. Bruno Fernandes drove down the right flank and delivered a cross that Matheus Cunha met first time, curling a stunning finish into the top corner. It was a goal worthy of winning any match.
Chelsea pushed hard for an equaliser after the break. Goalkeeper Senne Lammens had the crossbar to thank on two occasions – first denying Delap, then Wesley Fofana with headers that crashed against the woodwork.
But United held firm to claim all three points and leave Chelsea licking their wounds.
