England’s final friendlies for World Cup unsuccessful

The last international break before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar is finally behind us. The last week was all about the preparation for the biggest football tournament in the World. European nations played their final UEFA Nations League games. For Gareth Southgate this was the final opportunity to test his players to see which players should be on the plane to Qatar and which players will stay at home. In this article we briefly discuss the matches against Italy and Germany.

Italy versus England

The first of both matches was an away match against Italy. Gareth Southgate surprised a bit by putting right back Kyle Walker to the left back position. This wasn’t the best decision, since the English side really struggled with Italy. A goal by Raspadori in the 68th minute decided this match in Italy’s favour. A very poor game by England, which didn’t filled the nation with confidence for the upcoming game against Germany.

England versus Germany

The final match of England’s preparation was against Germany. This was the true definition of a match with two halves. The first half ended in a goalless draw. The second half was completely different. Germany took a 0-2 lead. A huge comeback by England brought them on a 3-2 lead. 3 minutes for time Kai Havertz scored the 3-3. 6 goals in one half is not something we see too often. One of the main things was the poor performance by Harry Maguire. Even Gareth Southgate said it’s going to be difficult for Maguire to get to Qatar for the World Cup.
