Will Bayern continue to dominate the Bundesliga?

Bayern Munich has dominated the Bundesliga for the last decade and took the title for the last 6 years straight. Last season they had an early season dip and fired coach Carlo Anchelotti and replaced him with club legend Jupp Heynckess. He was able to turn things around and Bayern ended up winning the league by a staggering 21 points. Heynckess came out of retirement only to help out the team in their time of need and then re-retired again after the season was over. Therefore, Bayern had to find a new manager, and decided to go for the Croatian Frankfurt manager Kovac.

The season started well with four wins from four in all competitions. However, then the team had a bad patch of form where there didn’t win in three matches in the Bundesliga, which included a 0-3 loss at home to Borussia Monchengladbach. This was added to a home draw with Ajax in the Champions League. Since then Bayern have gotten back to their usual selves and have won their following three games with relative ease. They now sit second in the Bundesliga, two points behind Dortmund.

Their next game this weekend is against Freiburg, which is followed by the biggest game of the Bundesliga season so far against Dortmund in the Westfalenstadion. This will be a big test for Kovac’s men and a lot hinges on this match. If Bayern win then they will overtake Dortmund at the top of the league depending on if they both win this weekend. Whereas if they lose to Dortmund, then there will be questions raised about Kovac and his team which could cause a loss of confidence in both.

The real test is the Champions League. Since Bayern last won it in 2013, they have made the semifinal stage 4 out of the following 5 seasons. One of Kovac’s targets is to win the Champions League. It will be a difficult task this season, as many teams in Europe have strong squads and will be competing. Currently Bayern are second in their group level on points with Ajax. It will be interesting to see how the group finishes and who Bayern get in the next round.
