Football in Turkey enjoys a huge following and is being played for over a century now. The country is having five professional leagues with one being exclusively dedicated for the women footballers. Istanbul Football League, the first among all the leagues, started in 1904. 18 club teams participate in the country's top division, Spor Toto Süper Lig. Teams like Galatasaray, Besiktas and Fenerbahce are known for their skills in European arena. Atatürk Olimpiyat Stadi in Istanbul, opened for public in 2002, is the largest stadium of Turkey which can accommodate about 76,000 fans in a day. The popularity of football increased with increasing strength of the national and club teams. Turkey participated in 1950, 1954 and 2002 World Cups.
