Arsenal was drawn against Paris Saint-Germain, FC Basel and Bulgarian side Ludogorets in the Champions League group stage. The draw took place on Thursday and Arsenal, one of eight teams in Pot Two, came out in Group A. Arsenal qualified for the Champions League Group Stage for the 19th consecutive season after finishing second in the England Premier League last season.
In the group stage, Arsenal’s safe passage through to the next round may depend upon the Gunners’ new signings. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger went out of character this summer and went on a £50 million shopping spree for new players to boost his side’s winning ways. The completion of the signing of Deportivo La Coruna striker Lucas Perez and Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi will take his summer spending to £90m.
Wenger was amused when asked if Perez was the Spanish Jamie Vardy after Arsenal missed out on signing Vardy earlier in the summer.
“I like that one, yes” replied Wenger. “Look at my face, is it the face of somebody who does a panic buy? No. I try to make the decision. But you will see how many transfers will happen in the next three or four days, it will be amazing, maybe the biggest amount ever.”
“I expected it to be easier than ever, but it was more difficult than ever” continued Wenger. “Not a lot has happened. It looks like when you meet other clubs and you have an English passport, you hit these prices which are very difficult to understand compared to the quality of the players.”
“It looks like it will be frenetic for me in the last three days,” added Wenger. “Everybody has sat on their pounds until now. We know they will all splash out now. I expect the next three days to be very, very busy.” y
Reportedly Lucas Perez will join Wenger’s side in a £17m deal.
“Perez is a late developer, he played in a different position. He moved centrally in a successful way. I think he has good link up qualities, good quality of receptions, good finishing qualities. Let’s see if we can finish the job,” said Wenger. “I think he will be a good player, but time will tell. He had three years at Everton, he went to Italy, to Spain, but at 17 years of age, it is a difficult age to play center-back in the Premier League. He was Valencia’s captain. If we get it done we get what we wanted.”
Shkodran Mustafi will join Arsenal in a £25m-plus deal that has been agreed upon with a fee potentially rising to £35m.
“I’m scared! You accuse me now of being a money splasher,” joked Wenger with the media about the signings. “You are not the only one who decides when deals are done. I met some people in the VIP rooms before games but it is not the best place to do deals - but that is why it was very late, it is not ideal for us. Who has finished in the market? Nobody. Everybody is waiting, I think, to get the deals done.”
Wenger said the transfer market will hit record levels with spending already above £900m. “A billion?” said Wenger.
