Europa League: Tottenham Hotspur 1-3 Benfica

Tottenham Hotspur misery continued last night with a 3-1 home loss to Benfica in the first leg of their last-16 Europa League tie.

Spurs dominated possession in the first half but created little danger to a well-organized Portuguese side.

Benfica took the lead in the 29th minute through Rodrigo who collected Ruben Amorim's pass and curled his shot past Hugo Lloris.

After the re-start, the visitors extended their lead through Luisao who headed home an Amorim corner.

Six minutes later, Christian Eriksen netted a superb free kick from 20 yards to make it 1-2 but Benfica grabbed a 3rd goal in the 84th when Nicolas Gaitan lifted a free kick into the box and Luisao collected Lloris’ rebound to send it into the back of the net.

Tottenham will need to improve fast as they host Arsenal in the North London derby this weekend before travelling to Lisbon for the second leg next week.
