Champions League: Man Utd 1-0 Shakhtar | Bayern 2-3 Man City
Manchester United 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk
Manchester United finished top of Champions League Group A, with Phil Jones scoring the winner in a comfortable victory over Shakhtar Donetsk. The win at Old Trafford means the Ukranian team are eliminated from the competition. Shakhtar were in control for large portions of the game, and put United under some considerable pressure, but the Reds prevailed and when Van Persie whipped in a corner in the 67th minute, it came to Phil Jones who lashed his volley into the back of the net past Pyatov. The Shakhtar players heard that Bayern Leverkusen were winning the other group fixture and were now holding second place in the table, and the team were noticeably demoralised by the news. They seemed to lose all enthusiasm after the goal and United were glad of the victory after losing their last two home games.

Bayern Munich 2-3 Manchester City
Manchester City ended Bayern Munich's record run of 10 consecutive Champions League wins with a 3-2 victory over the German side, but it still wasn't enough to finish top of Group D. The teams went into the match knowing they'd both qualified for the knockout stage and Bayern went one up within five minutes when Thomas Muller latched onto a pass from Dante and beat Joe Hart. Mario Gotze grabbed a second seven minutes later after he ended up with the ball from a Mandzukic shot and nudged the ball in from close range. It looked over for City, but they kept their cool and David Silva got them on the scoreboard after connecting with a Navas cross. City were awarded a penalty on the hour mark after James Milner was tripped in the area. Aleksandar Kolarov stepped up to score the equaliser and give City some hope of a win. Milner secured the win with a beautiful curling shot in the 62nd minute and City were strong enough to hold on for an inspired victory.
