Europa League: FC Basel 1-2 Chelsea | Fenerbahce 1-0 Benfica

FC Basel 1-2 Chelsea

Chelsea emerged victorious from their Europa League semi-final first-leg match against Basel at St. Jakob Park, beating the Swiss side 2-1. Chelsea took the lead in the 11th minute, when Lampard's corner hit an off-guard Victor Moses in the face and found it's way into the back of the net. They managed to hold onto the lead going into the break, Petr Cech keeping their lead intact after saving shots from Fabian Schar and Mohamed Salah. Both sides had various chances in the second-half, and just when Chelsea thought they had the win in the bag, Cesar Azpilicueta was penalised for a tackle on Stocker in the 87th minute and a penalty was given. Schar stepped up to level the game, and Chelsea went all out to try and pull something back in the last few minutes. In the fourth minute of added time they were awarded a free-kick 20 yards out, and David Luiz worked the ball past a poorly organised wall and saw it slip past Sommer to give them a crucial away goal advantage in the second-leg at Stamford Bridge next week.

Fenerbahce 1-0 Benfica

Fenerbahce will go into their Europa League semi-final second-leg with a one goal advantage after beating Benfica 1-0. In a hard-fought match, the deciding goal was scored by Egemen Korkmaz with 18 minutes of the game remaining. Korkmaz capitalised on an error by Benfica's Lorenzo Melgarejo in the 72nd minute to head the ball in at the far post. The Turkish team should have taken the lead in the first half, hitting the woodwork three times, and should also have scored from a penalty awarded just before half-time. Gokhan Gonul was caught by Ola John in the area, but Fenerbahce midfielder Cristian failed to convert. Benfica will feel positive they can overturn the one goal deficit at the Estadio da Luz on the 2nd May, but Fenerbahce deserved their victory and will hope to progress to their first European final.
