World Cup Qualifiers: England face San Marino

England get back to World Cup 2014 business this week in a game against San Marino, FIFA's lowest ranked European nation. The pint-sized republic located in northeast Italy near Rimini should be no match for England's stars and Roy Hodgson's men will be expected to win handsomely and without too much trouble. San Marino started their international football adventure in 1990 and since then have played 114 matches, losing 108. In that time they have shipped 473 goals, scoring just 19 and their sole victory came against fellow minnows, Liechtenstein in 2004. With zero FIFA ranking points, they are joint last in world football.

England expects

England have played San Marino twice before in World Cup qualifiers, winning 6-0 and 7-1, so fans will expect a similarly emphatic win, especially after the disappointing 1-1 draw with Ukraine. San Marino did, however, record the fastest goal in international history, with a strike by Davide Gualtieri in the 7-1 game after just 8.3 seconds.
