Manchester City 3-2 Southampton
Manchester City kicked off their title defence in dramatic style by leaving it late to secure the three points against Southampton. Carlos Tevez put the hosts in front in the first half before Southampton missed a chance to equalise from the penalty spot. The visitors took the lead after substitutes Rickie Lambert and then Steven Davis scored fine goals. However, Edin Dzeko and then Samir Nasri had other plans for the final result and their strikes made it 3-2 at full time. Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini will certainly have been happy with the result but not the defence that allowed two Southampton goals past.
