With matchweek nine now complete, the Premier League rounded off in style on Sunday and Monday, with late red cards, boos at St James' Park, and even Arsenal winning at Anfield. Here, we'll run you through the fixtures from Sunday and Monday.
Arsenal secure victory but Alisson's error steals the show
Arsenal continued their fine form on Sunday with a hard-fought win over Liverpool at Anfield. The game finished 1-0 in a contest where the hosts had plenty of the ball but failed to capitalise on their possession. Kai Havertz's 16th-minute goal, set up by Declan Rice, was enough to secure the victory and hand the Gunners their first Premier League win at Anfield since 2012. Liverpool should have been awarded a penalty in the first half when Jurrien Timber held onto Alexander Isak’s shirt for a little too long, but VAR failed to spot it, and Isak’s complaints were mild at best. Liverpool pushed hard for an equaliser and Florian Wirtz rattled the bar with a free-kick, but Andoni Iraola's side failed to register a single shot on target. Havertz's strike also saw him overtake Ilkay Gündogan as the Premier League's record German goalscorer, and Mikel Arteta's side now sit three points clear at the top of the table.
Newcastle woes continue
Newcastle United's poor run continued on Monday night after a 1-0 defeat at home to Everton. The game began with a sleepy feel, with the hosts booed off at half-time, before springing into life early in the second half. Lukáš Horníček saved Tyrique George's initial effort, but Thierno Barry was on hand to tap in the rebound and hand David Moyes' side the lead. Newcastle pushed for an equaliser, but their night got worse in stoppage time when substitute Jacob Ramsey picked up two yellow cards in quick succession. Everton claimed their first away league win of the season and their second win over Newcastle in four days, moving up to seventh, while Matthias Jaissle's side slip to 13th.
