Premier League: the week in review

27 October 2026 at 11:52

The Premier League served up plenty of drama on Saturday, October 24, with late winners, a red card, and even a perfect record coming to an end. Here, we'll run you through the key games from the day.

De Zerbi's Tottenham see off 10-man Chelsea

Roberto De Zerbi's Tottenham Hotspur beat Chelsea 2-0 on Saturday, handing Xabi Alonso his first home loss as Blues head coach. Chelsea, without the injured João Pedro, struggled to create chances, and the deadlock was broken in the 77th minute when goalkeeper Mike Penders punched the ball into his own net. Cole Palmer was sent off three minutes later for a second yellow card, and Mathys Tel's superb solo goal three minutes from time sealed it as the Italian coach headed back to north London with a smile on his face.

Aston Villa end Manchester City's perfect start

Aston Villa continued their fine form on Saturday with a hard-fought win over Manchester City. The game finished 2-1 in a contest that was far more nervy than the hosts would have liked. A brace from Nicolas Jackson was enough to secure the victory. However, it was City who refused to go away. Erling Haaland canceled out Jackson's sixth-minute opener seven minutes after the restart, and the visitors piled on the pressure late on, with Haaland denied a second equalizer by a goal-line block from Ian Maatsen. Despite Iliman Ndiaye hitting the post and Zion Suzuki making a string of fine saves, it was Jackson who grabbed the headlines as Unai Emery's side ended Enzo Maresca's bid for eight wins from eight, inflicting City's fourth straight league loss at Villa Park.

Fulham make it back-to-back wins

Fulham's revival continued on Saturday after a narrow 1-0 win over Coventry City. The game was played in torrential rain, with Fulham creating the better chances in the first half. Josh King hit the post and Calvin Bassey was denied a penalty by VAR, and they struggled to make the most of their dominance until Oscar Bobb's brilliant solo strike in the 80th minute finally broke the deadlock. American fans will have been excited to see USMNT left back Antonee Robinson go the full 90 minutes, putting in a solid defensive shift to help Fulham keep a clean sheet. Coventry rarely troubled Bernd Leno as Alvaro Arbeloa made it two wins in a row and lifted Fulham out of the relegation zone, leaving Frank Lampard's side second from the bottom.

Arsenal draw level with City as defenders deliver

Arsenal moved level on points with Manchester City at the top of the standings, beating Everton 2-0 to hand the Toffees back-to-back losses. Ezri Konsa struck in the seventh minute for his first Arsenal goal and Gabriel added a second in the 68th minute, heading home Ben White's cross in his 200th appearance for the club, to knock the stuffing out of the visitors, who struggled to force their way back into the game. The Gunners were without Bukayo Saka and had to shake off an early second-half injury scare to Gabriel, but they held firm for their third win in three games since the international break.

Sunday's Premier League action had a bit of everything, with a rout at Old Trafford, a much-needed win for Newcastle in south London, and Liverpool ending Brighton's unbeaten run at Anfield. Here, we'll run you through the key games from Sunday.

Liverpool end Brighton's unbeaten run as Isak strikes again

Liverpool climbed to fourth in the standings on Sunday with a hard-fought win over Brighton. The game finished 2-0 in a contest that turned out to be a fairly comfortable afternoon for the Reds after their fast start. With Liverpool on top early at Anfield, Pascal Gross turned Florian Wirtz's effort into his own net in the 17th minute, before Alexander Isak met Bradley Barcola's cross to score in a third straight league game. Despite Brighton hitting the post before halftime, the Reds held firm to give Andoni Iraola his first Premier League win at Anfield, ending the Seagulls' eight-game unbeaten run and moving to within a point of them.

Manchester United woes continue

Manchester United's poor start to the season continued on Sunday after a 3-0 loss to Bournemouth. Rayan gave the Cherries the lead seven minutes before halftime, and United couldn't respond, with Marcus Tavernier doubling the advantage five minutes later after a slip from Leny Yoro. Evanilson added a third in the 71st minute after Senne Lammens came off his line, extending United's winless run to eight games and leaving Michael Carrick's side 16th in the standings, just a point above the relegation zone. American fans will have been thrilled to see USMNT midfielder Tyler Adams play all 90 minutes at the heart of Bournemouth's midfield, covering more ground than any of his teammates as the Cherries ran riot at Old Trafford.

Brentford come from behind at Hull

Brentford fought back to earn a 1-1 tie against newly promoted Hull City. Oli McBurnie put the hosts ahead from the penalty spot in the 24th minute after a loose pass from Caoimhín Kelleher led to Tim Iroegbunam being brought down, before Dango Ouattara leveled from close range in the 63rd minute to rescue a point for the Bees, who had struggled through a poor first half. Hull remain unbeaten at home but have now gone six league games without a win, while Brentford make it four ties from four on the road this season.

Newcastle bounce back against Crystal Palace

Newcastle United picked up a much-needed win on Sunday, beating Crystal Palace 2-0 at Selhurst Park. William Osula gave the Magpies the lead two minutes after the restart before Harvey Barnes doubled their advantage in the 58th minute, as Matthias Jaissle's side bounced back in style from back-to-back losses and piled more pressure on Palace head coach Pierre Sage. It was a tough afternoon for the hosts, but American fans will have been excited to see USMNT center back Chris Richards play the full 90 minutes, winning eight of his 13 duels at the back for Palace.

Sunderland and Leeds share the points in windy stalemate

Sunderland were held to a 0-0 tie by Leeds United at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, in a game dominated by strong winds from Storm Boelo. Brian Brobbey had the best chance for the hosts but was denied by James Trafford, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin had a penalty claim waved away for Leeds. American fans will have been delighted to see USMNT midfielder Brenden Aaronson make his first Premier League start since late August, creating two chances before being subbed off after 65 minutes. The point ended Sunderland's four-game losing streak, but Regis Le Bris' side remain bottom of the standings, while Daniel Farke's Leeds climb to seventh.
