It was a big week in Europe for the English clubs, with history made on the south coast, a last-gasp winner in Portugal, and a painful homecoming in France. Here, we'll run you through how the English sides fared in the Europa League and Conference League.
Bournemouth make history on European home debut
Bournemouth continued their fine start in Europe on Thursday with a comfortable win over Sturm Graz. The game finished 3-0 in the first ever European match at the Vitality Stadium, and Marco Rose's side made sure it was a night to remember. Evanilson headed home Adam Smith's cross just before half-time to score the club's first ever European home goal, before Rayan pounced on a half-cleared corner and Álvaro Rodríguez converted a stoppage-time penalty. Following their 2-1 win at Real Sociedad on matchday one, the Cherries became the first English side since Bolton in 2005/06 to win their first two major European games.
Crystal Palace woes continue
Crystal Palace's frustrating start to the season continued on Thursday after a 3-2 defeat to Lyon. It was a painful return for Pierre Sage to the club he managed for 14 months, as his side fell behind early through Corentin Tolisso before Ernest Nuamah doubled the lead in first-half stoppage time. Palace improved after the break and Yeremy Pino pulled one back, but Pavel Šulc restored Lyon's two-goal cushion. Daichi Kamada's strike nine minutes from time set up a tense finish, but the Eagles couldn't find an equaliser as they fell to their fourth defeat of the season in all competitions.
Sunderland leave it late in Portugal
Sunderland survived a huge scare in the Europa League, coming from behind to beat Portuguese second-tier side Torreense 2-1. After making seven changes, Régis Le Bris watched his side fall behind to a stunning long-range strike from Volnei late in the first half. Jules Ahoka headed in Nordi Mukiele's cross to level midway through the second half, and after a late penalty decision was overturned by VAR, Noah Sadiki popped up in the 93rd minute to fire home the winner and make it two wins from two in the competition.
