With the international break now well behind us, the Premier League served up plenty of drama on Saturday, with late penalties, red cards, and even an unbeaten record coming to an end. Here, we'll run you through the key fixtures from the day.
Manchester City secure victory but Ipswich give them a scare
Manchester City continued their fine form on Saturday with a hard-fought win over Ipswich Town. The game finished 3-2 in a contest that was far more nervy than the hosts would have liked. A goal from Phil Foden and a brace from Erling Haaland were enough to secure the victory. However, it was Ipswich who refused to go away. Daizen Maeda cancelled out Foden's opener just two minutes later, and Zian Flemming's late penalty set up a tense finish, with 12 minutes of added time still to play. Despite having a third goal ruled out by VAR, Haaland still grabbed the headlines as Enzo Maresca's side made it seven wins from seven, with Maresca becoming the first manager to win his first seven Premier League games in charge of a club.
Fulham finally get off the mark
Fulham's poor start to the season finally came to an end on Saturday after a narrow 1-0 win over Hull City. The game began at a high tempo, with Fulham creating plenty of chances in the first half. Alex Iwobi's strike on 33 minutes gave them the lead, but they struggled to make the most of their other opportunities and were left hanging on late in the game. Substitute Ryan Sessegnon was sent off in stoppage time, but Hull failed to register a single shot on target as Alvaro Arbeloa earned his first Premier League win and lifted Fulham out of the relegation zone.
Chelsea end Everton's unbeaten start
Chelsea picked up their first away win under Xabi Alonso, beating Everton 2-0 to end the Toffees' unbeaten start to the season. Pedro Neto struck within a minute of the restart and added a second in the 90th minute to knock the stuffing out of the hosts, who struggled to force their way back into the game. The win was overshadowed by a nasty head injury to goalkeeper Emi Martinez, who was stretchered off after a collision with Jarrad Branthwaite, but the Blues held firm for their first league clean sheet in 23 games.
Iraola's Liverpool see off nine-man Brentford
Andoni Iraola's Liverpool came from behind to beat Brentford 2-1 on Saturday, handing the Bees their first defeat of the season. Keane Lewis-Potter's header had given the hosts the lead, but Yehor Yarmoliuk was sent off in first-half stoppage time for a headbutt on Jérémy Jacquet. Víctor Muñoz levelled after the break before Alexander Isak, back from injury, grabbed the winner, and Vitaly Janelt's late red card left Brentford with nine men as the Spanish coach headed back to Merseyside with a smile on his face.Newcastle continue to look shaky at the back
There was more misery for Newcastle United on Saturday as Aston Villa won 1-0 at St James' Park. Johan Manzambi, who had been set to join the Magpies in the summer before Villa swooped in, headed home João Gomes' cross on 36 minutes to hand Unai Emery's side all three points, just days after their 6-0 thrashing of Fenerbahçe in the Champions League. Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle will need to solve his side's problems quickly after back-to-back defeats, including Monday's 4-1 loss at Coventry, if he is to ease the growing pressure on his position.
